I have two 45s, a Kimber 1911 and a SIG 220 Elite. Both get hauled around in Sparks VMII holsters. Them's the biggest I own. They get carried now and then, but more often then not I carry a SIG 229 9mm or a Glock 19.
This is just my opinion, but if you know how to run a gun fairly well, a 9 will get you home. With good ammo, pretty much whatever you pick will be worthy. Lots of guys carry j frames, five shots and that's it. And they will be just fine because they can run 'em.
I will say that I have a bit more confidence in my shotguns, but they are a pain to hide, and therefore stay home.
.45 Colt Government Model in an IWB holster. Carried perhaps 20% of the time.
My wife and I just returned from a walk though and, rather than the Government Model, I'm toting a Colt Detective Special which I'll leave holstered in a pocket while I go out to trim some shrubs.

I often carry an HK 45C in a Phoenix Stronghold IWB holster, made by TT Gun Leather. Works well for me.

Usually a Glock-36 in either an IWB or an OWB at about 4:00.
Right now? My Ruger SP101 in an IWB at 4:00.

Colt Agent in a Mika pocket holster or a Colt Cobra in a high ride OWB.......or both.
My largest would be my Glock 30, carried OWB in a Glock Sport/Combat holster.
The number of people killed because they didn't have "enough gun" is dwarfed by those who had none at all. Get a gun you will always carry, and add more capability as you grow.
