It was the specific pistol Sig built for the French.
I believe its available in 9, .40 and .357 Sig.
They also had one very similar, called the Sigpro 2340

Most likely the least likely to be finicky , and more refined than the P250, with a better trigger.
I chose the Sig P220 because it is my favorite Sig.
I have a SF commemorative P220 .45. I wished they'd chosen the 226 in .40. I'm assuming this is a military unit you're getting the commemorative pieces for. In that case I'd narrow this list to the 220, 226, or 229.
Although I own, shoot and really like 1911s, I think for carry/defense, as long as it doesn't need to be concealed, a 226 is a better choice. Every one I've shot has been fairly accurate, and in a high stress situation, you don't need to remember to flip the safety off. As long as there's one in the chamber, just draw, aim, and pull the trigger.
P229 I have carried a lot of guns and shot just about every option out there and honestly, it's all personal choice. I don't mean to sound biased either way, but I have never experienced a weapon with a more natural feel, perfect balance or steadfast reliability as I have with my new P229. Not a brand issue, I just prefer it, your mileage may vary. I can''t keep my hands off this sexy thing. In fact, I am sneaking out in the morning to squeeze off some rounds at a buddy's house. Sure Sigs are a bit heavier, but you know what? I have carried lightweight carry guns and heavy 1911's...Sig is no lightweight but I can conceal it easily and it is my all time favorite gun.
P220 for me because I have one and I like the .45 caliber.
Thanks for all the replies so far guys. I'm leaning towards the P226 or 229 in .40. I'm also interested in the 1911 and P250. Heck if I can get two, I just might lol.
P2022 in .40 would be my vote. It's lighter than the metal framed P226's and is affordable priced just above the P250. I've shot both and I personally didn't care for the P250 because I thought the trigger was pretty pathetic and it was too blocky for what it was. Anywho, take a look at the P2022 if price and weight are an issue.
I've seen on several different sites that SIG is re-offering the P228.
That would be my choice...if you want a 9mm.
IMO, it seems to be a little better balanced than the P229.
I will contact Sig and see if the 2022, 228, or any of the others not in the poll will be available. The list is based off of the 2012 program. If it updates for 2013 I will be sure to check all the models available.

I voted for the SIG P220. It's such a timeless classic all around great firearm as are the others.
I have a P226 and P229...you can't go wrong with the classics.

I have two of the 1911's. I have the 3" UC and the 5" Scorpion and am 110% satisfied with both. Not only are they beautiful almost presentation quality already but extremely accurate right out of the box. All I have done is give them a good sound cleaning right out of the box and we to shooting, and everybody that has shot the Scorpion loves it and can't believe how clean and crisp the trigger is and how accurate and manageable the recoil is. The 3" UC looks like a Kimber with a clean crisp trigger but no tools required for break down, and yes I have owned a Kimber also so I speak from experience. Exceptional shooter right out of the box also. This one is my off work conceal carry. I have nothing against the polymer guns, I just love the look and the feel of a quality 1911 in my hand.
When the EOD Field did a run a couple years ago we opted for the 220 SAO in .45. They turned out real nice. Second choice would be the 226 in .40.
