    Priorities in SD shooting:

    1. Shot placement (putting multiple hits on target, quickly)
    2. Penetration
    3. Expansion, 'punching a big hole'.

Based on the above, it makes sense to go .40 or .45 over 9mm if and only if you can place multiple hits on target as quickly as you could with 9mm. All too often, people say "I can handle the recoil" because it doesn't bother them under slow fire. Well... Duh.

Set a target at 3-5 yards. Mag dump with a 9, then a .40 and/or .45. As fast as you can. If your placement is comparable, go with the .40 or .45. If not, go with the 9mm.

    Nothing wrong with .40 S&W. However, there is little doubt .40 S&W is a compromise round between a 9mm & a .45 ACP.

.45 ACP is IMHO, the best all around SD round out of a semi-auto. Push back vs snappy recoil in a round that does what you want for SD. With that said, I don't own a .45 ACP, because I like Glocks. Nothing wrong with a .45 ACP Glock, but if I ever purchase a .45 ACP it is going to be a 1911.

I like the .45 ACP so much, my next purchase will be a....10mm. Don't know when I will ever get around to buying a firearm in my favorite caliber. But I need a woods carry, and the 10mm is better that the .45 ACP (sometimes I think the penetration of .357 sig might be a better woods carry than a .45 acp).

I might be switching for .357 SIG to 40 S&W because the wife is going from 9mm to 40 S&W. It is our compromise round so we both have the same rounds for SD, stashed mags around the house, going to the range, etc.

I'm struggling with 40 S&W a bit. It is a fine round, but the same frame size can use a .357 sig. .357 sig is a better round for SD. 9mm +P is just as good as 40 S&W, but you get a few more rounds. Both 9mm +p and .357 sig are snapper than 40 S&W, but it really is a wash with recoil, with .357 sig having the SD advantage.

To sum up, if you have a 9mm +P, not sure 40 S&W is a relevant move unless you are also considering .357 sig or there is an additional factor, like wanting to have a common round in the household.

All are minor issues, because frankly, they will all do the trick.

I am one that has no special interest in a 40. I own just about everything else. However walk in local Fleet farm today. No 9mm , to be had. but a whole rack of 40.
I could see adding a 40 to the mix. Was eying a Ruger SR40C today.

    I have too many calibers of ammo to keep track of now. I don't want to add another. I have rifles/pistols/shotguns in .22, .38, .357, .380, 9mm, 5.56, 7.62, and 12ga. I think that's enough.

I EDC a Gen. 4 G23 most of the time, on occasion it's a Sig P229 SCT in .40 and my bedside pistol is an XD Service .40 with TLR3. All of my Local LEO's carry the .40 with the exception of State Police which carry P229's in .357 Sig. The round is always in stock where ever I go for ammo, (more often buy online), and is easily borrowed from friends and family due to it's popularity here. I have nothing against other service pistol rounds and own a .45 auto, but currently don't have a 9mm. Caliber wars are useless commentary unless you are only allowed FMJ's.

I carry and S&W .40 everyday. I did correct the problem with the hard trigger pull though.

My normal EDC is a P238 (.380), but if I'm going for a walkabout in the New England woods I CC an XD-40 service model in a Remora with on extra mag.

I Have a G27,G23 in my carry rotation. But added a Xds 45 to replace my summer 380 EDC. I have a 9mm also. G19. IMO 40 and 9mm have same felt recoil with defensive ammo...to me. The Tiny Xds 45 has less recoil. My 1911 45 is butter.
Get what you like and can afford to shoot . 9mm,40 and 45 all will do the job.

I have a Sig .40 that I would be fine with carrying.

As it is I carry either a G21 or a G20 - which is sort of like a .40 I guess. I'd lose capacity switching to the Sig - even from the G21.

I have nothing against 9mm - just don't own any myself. My wife has a G26 that I would be happy to carry for defense.

My primary HD handgun is a Gen 3 G22. For CC, it's a Gen4 G26. However, I would not hesitate to carry my G22 or a smaller firearm in .40.
