Say Hello to My Taurus PT 790!

Long story will make it as short and painless as possible.

December 9th, 2012 burglary. Most of my hanguns stolen left me with no carry piece except the S&W 19-5 .357 magnum with a long barrel. Not the carry type.

February 2013 got some money from insurance, really not enough to replace all but some.

March 9th, 2013 me and the wife went gun shopping and just about every place we went was cleaned out, with the exception of the $600 plus hand guns and so crowded with potential buyers, could not get to the gun counter. The day before while at work, I almost snagged a Kahr CM9 for $389 but waited until Saturday. It was gone when we went back.

I got a cell call from a number I did not recognize. Turned out to be one of the guys who comes to play guitar with my group every now and then. Great guy, gun guy, concealed carry guy. He was headed to a small gun shop and saw us in traffic and just called to say hello. Wife and I went to where he was and I got a Taurus PT 790 9mm and a Ruger 10-22.(Wife has been drooling over them for awhile so we got one.) Others in the place were laughing when she said she'd take the gun over jewelry. One guy asked if she had a "daughter." It was funny.

Taurus cost 335 NIB, the "used" one was only $10 less and it was a no brainer to buy new. I made it my Avatar today.

We went to the Range after Church to check out our new accquisitions. The PT 709 fired with no problems. It ate the Winchester ammo and the Tula ammo with gusto. Of course I was all over the target because it is a new firearm. I finally got some decent groupings about the last magazine fired. Needless to say, Jo Jo Gunn is happy to have a carry pistol. Been feeling kind of naked without one.

Better photo of the new pistol below.

Sorry to hear about the break in. Perhaps the next call you receive from a number you don't recognize will be LEO saying they at least recovered one of them!

Congrats, make sure to degrease it as much as possible before shooting it.

By the way, the number for Taurus customer service is 305-624-1115. Trust me, you will need it.

I've got a Stainless PT709 I've had for 5 years. I've got over 2,200 flawless rounds through mine. Not a single issue. It's been great!!!

Sorry to hear about your break-in, however congrats on your new gun !!! I had a Taurus PT709 and had close to 6000 problem free rounds through it before selling it to a police officer that wanted it as his backup gun. Seems like all of my mini 9's that I have sold in the past have all gone to different LEO's for backup use such as my Taurus PT709, Keltec PF9, and Diamondback DB9. Yes he knew it had that many rounds when he pruchased it. He told me that he knew it worked and was broken in properly !!! Enjoy and God Bless !!!

    Thank you all!

I took the 790 Slim out of the box, took it apart for a thorough cleaning before I even chambered a round. I have "heard" the stories both good and bad so I just did it. Plus, I needed to know how to break it down and get familiar with it before I ever fired that first shot. While most firearms are good to go out of the box, why chance it? And the occasional lemon happens too.

It feels very similiar to my now-gone S&W 39-2 9mm although not a great replacement, but one that should serve me well. I just need to score some extra mags and a better holster. And stock up on some 9mm ammo if I can find it.

Burglaries do suck, I am still reeling from mine. We got the pistol and rifle two months to the day it happend so it was on my mind at the time. I do have some hope, stolen firearms do get recovered but many times they do not or years later and have been abused so badly by their new "owners" they end up usless to get back.

Again thanks for all the kind replies!

PS.....Slim.....that's a good name for mi pistola!
