    S&W SD9VE Scare

At range today with my son, who was running some precious 9mm ball through his S&W SD9VE. It's really been a pretty good little gun. JHP's feed well, etc... I suppose he has maybe 500 rounds through it - he got it about a week before the "ammo crunch," but his limited experience has been good. No FYF, FTE, or malfunctions of any type... Until today. He was shooting up some no-name range ammo I dug out of the closet. 115 gr ball, but it looked ok. ON the 13th round of mag 2, the gun locked up. The round fired, but the slide would not reciprocate. after much coaxing, I finally got it open, and barrel off. Case showed no bulge or crack, extractor seemed ok. Switched to WWB, ran without a hiccup. No further problems.
Has anyone had any similar experiences with this gun. I don't know how a bad round would do this. Just looking for someone to help us out, and not mistrust this otherwise good gun.

I agree, it sounds like ammo. I hope you checked the barrel for obstructions before firing additional rounds.

bad ammo can make any gun malfunction no matter how good the gun.

I have a p238 that had thus far zero malfunctions in 800 rounds. I got a big online order of some brass cased Armscor crap. THAT was horrible ammo. In 100 rounds of that I had 5 complete duds. I couldn't get them to fire later when I struck them with a hammer and nail in the backyard. Most of the rest of it was very under or over powered. So I was getting a lot of FTF because the powder in it was horrible. I even had 1 round literally not fit in the barrel. It was WAY too big in the diameter to fit. Others were also close so they were having feeding problems too.

Moral of the story is that if you are using junk ammo with wrong dimensions, bad powder, and bad primers then you are going to experience a bunch of malfunctions no matter how "good" the gun is.

I've got a first generation Sigma .40SW. Despite it's bad press, I like it. Never a hiccup. Don't have a ton of rounds through it, but several hundred to break in went well. I really like the grip angle better than Glocks...but don't tell anybody I said so. I like my Glocks, but people get ripped up about anything else.

Does anyone's eels barrel look like that. The piece that is under the 9mm marking. This is my first gun. And I think if should be like that for when the casing comes out of the gun

I broke my S&W SW40VE down and figured I'd snap a pic for you. May not help, but I figured it wouldn't hurt.

    It needs cleaned though...

I have one with the barrel out now. can you post a pic with the barrel facing the camera straight and turned like it would be if it were in the gun?

From that first pic you posted yours is like mine except at least from the pic it looks like there may be a chip out of the corner of the lug the recoil spring rides on. But it could be the pic also.

Even if there is a chip out I dont see how that would cause what you describe. Im thinking bad ammo, possibly a swelled case mouth.

My sw40ve didnt have that burr nor does the sw9ve i have now. However I was talking about the very first photo in the thread by the other poster. In that pic it looks like that barrel has the corner chipped lug on the bottom
