    S&W 4013 Personal Perfection

I've been carrying a S&W 4516 for some time. Excellent pistol, the only compact 45 I've had or seen, to be 100% reliable. The drawback was it's weight. It will pull your britches down all day. I looked at the 457, but didn't like the short tang, and blocky slide. I then tried to purchase a PC Shorty 45. Well, folks are proud of those. I like S&W, but I don't like em more than $500.
So, today I stop at the local shop to get ammo. The nice fella's in there say that a local LEO traded a nice S&W yesterday - 4013. It's an aluminum framed single stack 40. 8+1, same size as the 4516, but only weighs 26oz. LNIB, they say the fella who traded it was a local small town Chief of Police (I guess that accounts for the LNIB LOL). This is the perfect pistol for me. Light weight, good capacity in a reliable package. Easy to conceal in plainclothes, and easy to carry all day. I cleaned and lubed it tonight. I'll post a range report tommorow. Anyone else have one of these? Regards 18DAI.

I have one that was a departmental weapon that was never issued, but I managed to secure it after we traded last time. I just recently started carrying it, and it is a nice package.

I like those original 4013's....not too much of a fan of the TSW version of that gun.

I'm looking for one to add to my carry selection. My primary carry is a Smith 6946 police trade in weighing 24 oz with 12+1 double stack. I do like the look of the 4013/4053 and it generally uses the same holsters as my 69xx gun.

Looking forward to info on how you like it with pics of course.

Here's what he is talking about...

There is a S&W 4013 (not the "Tactical") for sale for $575 on Guns America now:

There were at least two versions of the 4013: the original 4013 is a single stack; gun; and the TSW/Tactical is a compact double-stack with a light rail.

I remember Mas Ayoob giving the gun high praise and laying out a "system concept": you carry the 3913 9mm as a summer gun (easier to conceal), 4013 as a fall/spring gun (under a light jacket) and 4506 (or other .45 ACP S&W's) as a winter gun. Made sense to me at the time....great thing is that all of these guns had the same manual-of-arms.

The 4013 photo is the version I have. They had the 4013TSW pre-rail, as well. On the 4013TSW, I thought that the grip was a bit harder to conceal. I appears to be a double stack, but the capacity is 9+1. For the loss of one round, the single stack meets my needs much better. I am put off by the "billboard", laser etching on the TSW series too. I owned a 4563TSW, and did not find it to be any more accurate than my standard 4566, or 4506. In fact it shot consistantly low, despite putting a shorter front sight, and raising the rear sight. I despise the rails on the TSW series as well.
I agree with Mas Ayoob, on using the 3913, and 4013. I use a 3913 as a BUG. I'm now looking at a S&W CS9. I can carry both the CS9 and 4013, and not need suspenders.
I sold a 4506 no dash to purchase the 4013. I like the 4506 and 4506-1, and keep buying them. But the weight makes them a chore to carry, and I don't have enough income to own "Range only" guns. I'm off to the range with the 4013. I'll tell y'all how it works out. Regards 18DAI.

    I thought there was a pre-rail 4013 TSW, but I couldn't remember.

There's a single-stack 4013 for sale at a gun store that I visit during lunch in SF. It's way overpriced, but it would be a good gun if it were priced right.

Here is a great place to get used Smiths, Glocks and Sigs. He specializes in police trade-ins. There are a bunch of 45xx guns on the site now.

The current 4013TSW with the double stack mags will accept the 11 round mags of the 4003/4006/etc.

I shot the 4013 this afternoon. I ran 150 rounds Winchester White box, 24 rounds Ranger 180 grain SXT, and 24 rounds 165 grain SXT. The 4013 "liked" the 165 grain Ranger T best. It shot right to POA/POI. As expected, the pistol was 100% reliable. It was also extremely accurate. Until today my 3913 was my most accurate S&W semi. Not any more. The RO shot a 1.5" four round group at 15 yards with the pistol. This gun takes all the best from the 4516 and 3913 and combines it. Light weight, adequate capacity, good caliber, in a perfect (for me) sized package. I looked in my safe wondering if I should sell all the pistols I no longer need. The 4013 is that good. I wonder why they didn't make/sell more of these. Regards 18DAI.

My 4013 (pre rail) is on my permit. Very accurate and reliable, and comfortable to carry IWB. I run Ranger T's through it for SD.

I had a 4013 several years ago and traded it for a Glock 23. I have been sorry ever since although the Glock is a fine weapon, its not as slick looking and accurate as the 4013. Steve 48
