Good read. This officer had a failure to stop with .45 ACP COM hits, and switched to 9mm, for more capacity. Can't say I fault him.

Best lesson learned is to aim for the head. If you fire a few COM and he is still coming, aim for the head.

Next best lesson is that caliber is moot when discussing handguns. All handguns suck. Did I mention aim for the head?

    17 & 33 round magazines?

I thought 10 rounds was supposedly all anyone needs.

    Yeah...exactly!
This has really shaken my world and perhaps is a wakeup call for many.
..and this guy is a (TRAINED) instructor for the PD!

Get a gun that we are most accurate with and go for a head shot? Seems to run counter what so many other trainers teach.

COM might be good general advice; but seems to not necessarily be the best advice.
I fully understand a head shot is considered low percentage compared to COM...but jeeze!...14 hits and the assailant kept coming for 56 secs?
Drug induced anesthesia or not; this story is frightening.

I'm seriously considering more ammo on my person after reading this.
At a minimum, I need to do some hard thinking about this and analysis.

I agree that this story in in several ways earth shattering, but this is an exception, not a norm. I almost always carry a backup magazine, just because you never know. After serving two tours in Iraq, when the SHTF, you can do without everything except for more bullets. If I was that officer, I would have firmly planted my size 10.5 boot deeply in that doctors southern orifice for his remark.

Shame we can't like a post more than once.

(Oh, and OP, thanks for the story. In all seriousness, it is a story that does make one think.

If a "master firearms instructor and a sniper on his department’s Tactical Intervention Unit" needs more than 10 or 15 rounds against one gunman, why wouldn't an average Joe need more, as well?

BINGO. Yet our Benevolent Leaders want to relegate us to only 7 or 10 rounds.

Point # 1 we're not cops. Point # 2 if I run out of ammo I am putting on my boogie shoes and getting some distance between me & the BG. As mentioned the point of using a weapon is to come away alive. If I get a few hit to com & I run out of ammo what I need is three or four minutes for BG to bleed out.

Boogie shoes don't outrun boolits, even if unencumbered by adequate amounts of ammo.

I do wonder about capacity at times. Sometimes I carry a Semi auto with 14 rounds, but most of the time I carry a j-frame with one reload. I play the odds, I suppose - I'm not a cop, very unlikely I'll need to use my weapon, very unlikely I'll need even five.

But still I wonder at times.

For those that speak of bugging out - that's fine if you are by yourself, but often I have one or more loved ones with me. So it's not so easy to say you'd pop off one or two and then run away....

Yeah but realistically, you're not carrying more than a 3 mags (including the one in it) for your main gun and a BUG at best, and if you are, you must live in a war zone. I hear all the time about how it's next to impossible to aim in a self defense shooting because of the adrenaline, this goes both ways (as seen by the BG in this scenario) of you manage to hit the BG COM with even one shot and hit the hills, I would bet upwards of 99 times out of 100 he's not going to be accurate enough to hit you as you run. I feel confident in my 15 rounds of 45acp that I carry daily, and if it turns out I ever need more, I've likely dug myself a hole I wouldn't get out regardless of how many extras I carried.

At that point, they are the ones bugging out and I'm going to show the same determination this BG showed at trying to save them and God willing I'll be successful.
