SP101 is double action Only?? For real?

I always thought Ruger SP101's (the ones with external hammers at least) were double or single action capable. I'm in the market for one and looked at the instruction manual only to find out it's DAO? Is this true? Why have an external hammer at all if it's DAO?

See page 12 of the instruction manual...

Revolvers are listed as double-action only, double-action, or single-action only. A double-action revolver can also be shot in single-action as long as the hammer is accessible.
I carry a gun, because a Cop is too heavy.

I think you mis-read it, it states that,

OPERATION OF “DOUBLE-ACTION ONLY “ REVOLVERS
(This section applied only to “Double-Action Only” revolvers, identified by their
    lack of a hammer spur
    )
The model you have selected is equipped with a special trigger mechanism that
permits only “double-action” firing. The hammer cannot be manually cocked,
since there is no full cock notch or hammer spur. The revolver can only be fired
by a relatively long (“double-action”) pull of the trigger which draws the hammer
rearward and then releases it to fire every shot.
It is important to note that the mechanism of the gun will not permit another
shot to be fired unless the trigger is first fully released and then pulled again.

This would mean that some are DAO, some are DA/SA - the DAO being identified by having no hammer spur.

I have a DAO SP 101 id'd by lack of hammer spur. It's been a good tool but less than a pleasure with TGIRL (Thank God It's a Ruger Loads). I have never seen a DAO with a hammer that wasn't modified post factory. That may just be the sheltered life I've led.

They are DA/SA as long as they have the hammer.

...speaking of standard factory models, yes...I'm not aware of any produced even on special order that had a hammer spur and no cocking notch on the hammer...most departments that order DAO for safety also bob them...there'd be no reason for a spur...

...there may be some out there where the spur's been cut off after leaving the factory...those would have a cocking notch in them and would be DA/SA.........I had a SS SpeedSix that I had a trigger job done on by Cal Duke and had him bob the hammer...I could still start the hammer back with a DA stroke, then cock it with my weak hand...very dangerous to cock and decock that way, so I didn't ...
