If you really want to do that (a service sized slide on a SC frame), go on XD talk and search around for the Dremel mod or the chop mod. It's been done, you basically cut down the grip on a service model. Apparently it's not that hard and a number of places will do it professionally. It's the XD equivalent of the "19L" conversion.
What caliber are you talking about? If it's 45 they now make the compact in service size, if 40 or 9 you can get the service model and cut it down to fit the existing subcompact magazines.
Why do that? To have a 4" barrel with smaller, easier to conceal grip.
I considered cutting down a grip on a service to the sub c. size. I do see they offer a version right from the factory , using mag extensions. (not sure how they stole my idea  )
