What are some good options in .45 caliber for carry/home defense?

Hi all, I have about $600 that I can spend on a pistol that I'll use for carry and home defense. I am dead set on a .45, however I know that $600 won't get me a 1911, so I am wondering what are some of the brands and models I should be looking at? New or used. Thanks in advance.

$600 certainly can get you a 1911....just not a top quality pistol. There are a number of different manufacturers that produce 1911's in that price range, such as Taurus and Rock Island. Many of these firearms function well. Another choice would be a Glock 21. Full sized pistol, but high capacity. If you want a smaller pistol, Para Ordinance makes several smaller commander or officer size 1911 platform pistols, and Glock has the 36 and 30S. I have a Para P-12 that functions very dependably (I know some haven't) and it has a 12 + 1 capacity in an officer sized pistol. Try them out to see what suits your preference best. I like high capacity pistols in .45 ACP. Shock and awe! My next pistol (don't tell my wife) will be a Glock 21

Glock. You will get a pistol that you can trust your life to, and within your budget.

Another possibility, would be an S&W M&P. Im pretty much a 9mm guy, (for a fighting pistol), so I dont know if M&Ps come in .45 acp, but would expect they do.

I own both Glocks & M&Ps, and would trust my life to either.

You can get a Glock, Springfield Armory XD, or FNH in high capacity .45 ACP. I would recommend a Rock Island Armory in a 1911 for the best bang for the buck in a metal gun.

Isn't there a rock island armory 1911 at Buds Gun Shop right now that's on sale for like $359 or something?

Granted, it's the full size, which can be a bit tough to carry (but definitely doable), but you'd have hundreds left in your budget for a super high quality holster (and YES, that makes a huge freakin difference).

If I cared for single action cocked and locked...or for .45 for that matter, I'd have already POUNCED on that 1911 by now. Unfortunately I care for neither, so you don't have to worry about me scooping them up before you get the chance :)

Edit: ah, big john beat me to the punch...and it's $329! RIA is a pretty good name in 1911's too. Not top of the line...but considered good and reliable if I'm not mistaken.

    S&W M&P 45c for $500ish. You'll never look back.

This a trick question, right? Any of the Glock .45 will do nicely...'21', '30', or the '36'...have fun picking one out.

My EDC is the Glock-36, I also have the Glock-30, and the Glock-21 sits next to the bed.

    Sig P245 and Glock 36

I also like .45s and use the two shown below for carry and home defense. These are the Sig P245 and the Glock 36. Both are compact, holding 6+1 rounds, and have been reliable and accurate for me. The Sig is out of production but can be bought used in the $600 range. The Glock is about $600 new.

CZ 97 B, or 97 BD, might be a good option to consider.

I would check out FNH for your price range. They are hard to beat, and better then Gock, IMO. (I'll probably be dodging bullets on this one)
I wouldn't touch a 1911 unless it was a Colt Combat Commander. For about $1,000, they are the out of the box 1911. (Putting on my Kevlar vest)

This. I use the 8 round mag for carry and the 10 round mag with x-grip for HD.
    Great shooting gun.

That P245 is an awesome pistol....would love to find one. I am very happy with my Gen 4 G30.

LOVE that price, but I read that this is an 'entry level' gun....that doesn't mean cheap, right?
