Almost NIB Series 80 Colt 1911 for $650???

    Greetings!

A LGS has an almost perfect blued series 80 with rubber Colt grips for $650.

    Good buy?

I kinda like the concept of the series 80 type safety.

    Thanks for your input.

    Yes, that's a good buy. Probably a 1991 series 80

If it's a Mk IV series 80 I'd run and get it. If it's a 1991 series 80, then it's kinda high on the price. The shop I work at has a 5 inch 1991A1 for 700.00 and it's been sitting there.

Horrible gun and they have it way over priced. What is the name of the shop and their phone number? I need to call and discuss why they're doing this to people. ;) Around here the 1991 goes for well more... but that could be because I'm in the middle of nowhere.

If it means anything, it has the plastic trigger and plastic main spring housing. Not sure on the Mk IV.

When I want to check out the pricing on a used gun I go on Gunbroker.com and look at closed auctions for that type of gun to see what people actually paid.

IIRC, then it is a 1991A1, not a MK IV. I could be wrong though, is the main spring housing flat or arched?

I would stay away, I had one and it had problems failing to eject. I paid $875 new for it. 10 months later ended up selling it for a loss at $500

How come? You bought it new, wouldn't the manufacture fix it? Was it sent back to them multiple times and you still experienced problems?

It sounds like a 1991A1, as you say it has a plastic trigger and mainspring housing. Nothing that can't be replaced with a upgrade that you can't do yourself.
I recently bought a 1991A1 Compact (similar to the Officers Model) for 550.00 at the shop I work at. It didn't have a box, but looked about NRA Excellent condition. I'll try to get a pic up soon, as my computer isn't being cooperative right now.
See if you can get it for 600.00-625.00. That way, you have a little room to work with on upgrades. Personally, I think I'd just shoot it, carry it, and enjoy it.
Either way, it's a COLT, and the design has been going strong for over 100 years.

Could be a MK IV, Colt started using the Zylon mainspring housings circa '85/86.

Very well could be, but Colt did use plastic triggers on the later #O1991 Government Models also.
