so that the item you put on the rail can lock into place. without them you would have to crank down hard to keep it in place. with the notches the items used can have a spring loaded locking system to lock itself on the rail.

It's also a standard used across a wide variety of firearms. With that, you get a single rail with a hundred different products that will fit it, as well as the ability to move those items to another gun without changing the mounts.

So that firearms manufacturers can use the word "Tactical" or say that their product was endorsed or is in use by SF, SEALS, USSOCCOM, Rangers, and/or the Boy Scouts of America and not feel guilty about it as they overcharge for the weapon since I think most people get these guns for the coolness factor of having a gun with rails but never use or properly use them.

That said, my Beretta 92G Vertec sits by my bed with a Surefire X200A clamped to its rail in service as my home defense handgun.

I've made a few for some of the black guns that I've got.

The biggest advantage that I can see it that you can move scope rings exactly where you need them, you arent limited to two spots on the gun that will fit. This comes in handy for virtually any kind of scope whether it be a long eye relief, no magnification, targets scope, tatical scope ,flashlights, night vision or whatever you may have.

Its a one rail fits all kind of thing.

They keep the rail mounted light, laser, etc.,from slipping up and down the rail during recoil. Without the cross notches cut,the device could not be mounted strong enough no matter how much you torqued the screws/bolts.

EDITED TO ADD: This is also why it is important that when mounting something on a rail, while tightening the screw/nut down, you hold the implement FORWARD in the notch.

    Example: my .50 Beowulf. -----

At night in my home I find it comforting that there is a rail on my Beretta 92G-SD....

Aaahhh, got it. Ive got a streamlight tlr-2 on my g38 and it works just fine accept for the relocations after the range trips. Do the newer rail mounted items have a different clamp that accesses the picatinny slots? I dont think my tlr-2 does.

The rail sytem and mount should be almost universal. While some use different lock down methods, they all should lock on securely with Picatinny rails.
Did you tighten the side screw after mounting?

Yeah but my glock doesnt have picatinnys; but my new P30 will when I'm lucky enough to get one. Which at that time I'd like to use my trl-2 so long as it benefits from the picatinnys.

After taking my tlr off, I see that it does have a little cross-member for pic access and my g38 does actually have 1 pic slot, just not multiple slots. Interesting, I never investigated it that close I guess. Thanks!
