    M&P Shield in 9mm or .40?

I've fired the 9mm but not the .40.

Any input as to the recoil differences between the two besides the standard "more recoil in a .40)?

I have the .40 shield. I can't compare the recoil to the 9mm shiled, but from firing my .40, there is not much recoil at all to me.

Same as Erich. The recoil is very light for me. I've poured rounds through it and not really been sore at all. Get the .40, buy a 9mm barrel and magazine and swap as you want. Boom.

I have a 9mm but I probably would have gone with a .40 if it weren't for my wife shooting 9mm. It's a lot easier to only have one caliber of ammo to deal with for us.

Is this a S&W barrel or after market? I didn't realize you could do this with the shield!

NVM...just looked it up, thanks for suggesting it though, sounds like a .40 with an extra 9mm barrel is the way to go.

I had the 9 and traded for the 40. It is difficult for me to say with any honesty that there is a great difference between them.

I have a M&P Core 9mm & a M&P 40C. The recoil on the 9mm is negligible. The 40C (like most other 40s) tends to "flip" when fired instead of pushing back like a 9mm or 45 cal. I love both M&Ps and the've gone bang each & every time.

I'd get the .40. Personally I find shooting a .40 no different than shooting the 9mm +P ammo that so many love. That +P makes it feel virtually identical in my experiences.

That much said there's another benefit to the .40. You can buy the .40 and drop in the S&W 9mm barrel and it will function normally. You can't do the reverse.

I have a Shield in 40, my wife has the 9mm version. To me, the difference shooting them side-by-side is negligible at best.

Also, around here at least, .40 cal is much more readily available than 9mm.

Although it's possible, I don't think it's quite as easy to track down barrels anymore. I've seen a lot of forum posts saying that S&W wouldn't sell them an replacement barrel. If you plan to go that route, make sure you can find one.

I would go with the .40 for sure. The pistols cost the same, 9mm and .40 ammo are similar in price, and you get the power of .40 S&W.

I have both the 9mm and .40 and find I do not shoot the 9mm at all anymore. Just not enough difference to worry about.
