Step one: Get a night stand
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”
And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

easy to use - no fumble when in a haze
reliable - must go bang when needed
flash light next to or attched to it - able to see/blind the BG without backlighting yourself
hidden and/or secured but easily accessed - You don't want others to get it.. like a visiting child or someone who breaks in while you are not there.
most thieves will look under and toss the bed, pull out and dump drawers
either get a nightstand with a hidden compartment (pricey) or a nightstand WITHOUT a drawer and attached a handgun up under the top. easy to get, hard for others to find

I feel that a home invasion is the place I would face more than one BG. So I keep a CZ Compact with 14 +1 should suffice wifey has her 642 an a 870 under bed. Also have perimeter alarms outside an little yappy dog on foot of bed or sneaks up on my pillow.

Yep, me too. No need to re-invent the wheel.....

This is assuming you carry a fighting pistol as a carry gun.....

Something that I can use in my sleep
A pistol that I am so confident in and familiar with that I can use it without thought.

For me that is either a revolver or Beretta M9, both have been my night stand guns. Now it is a S&W 65 and will likely remain what I reach for when things go bump in the night for years to come.

Lights, rails, capacity are all gravy to me. I want a pistol that I know so well it is an extension of my will. Training will do that for you, if you have a reliable pistol to begin with.

I wanted a DA/SA for my nightstand gun. So the first shot is DA, subsequent are SA. This is personal preference, but offers me more security as I don't have the gun holstered at night.

The gun is a Sig SP 2022 40 cal.

If you don't plan on it also being your carry gun then size and weight no longer matter (although you can carry a 1911 concealed if you really want to). The only limit is what you are comfortable and accurate shooting.

    Dead on reliable
Locked up when you are not home
    Plenty of firepower

Personally I use my carry weapon and have a mossy by my bed. Hallway to my bedroom is 30 feet and back lit from 2 side rooms. My room will be dark. I have serious hardwood to hide behind. I like my odds.

I like the idea of having the nightstand top lift off. Easy to do when needed, very unlikely kids or other adults are going to move your lamp to see if the top opens.

I do believe this will be my next home project. ;)
