Question Smith and Wesson 637 or 642?

So I am looking for a summer carry pistol, and these look like the most likely choices. My only concern with the 642 is the trigger pull since it is DA only.

    Any thoughts or experiances?

I was looking at Taurus also, but I do not like the key lock system.

My experiance with revolvers is a bit limited, but I wouldnt let a DA trigger scare you off. Its a carry gun for defensive work, not a range gun. I cant really think of any defensive situation that the ablity to go SA would make a difference.

I guess it would be nice to have the "option" to go single action if need be.

yeah, it might. I also would be concerned with the hammer spur getting caught up in clothing during a draw.

    hi erik,
    my name is erik also.lol
anyhow i just went through the same thing you are right now and decided to buy the 637 because i like the option also.
pocket carry is of some concern to me because of the hammer.
but if you can remember to put your thumb over it when you need to pull it out i think it would be alright.
i was also thinking of bobbing the hammer but if thats the case i should of just bought the 642.
anyhow i love to shoot it!!
she's got some pop to it though.
I know you can buy shrouds to put over it too.but this requires drilling and tapping.

If you were going to bob the hammer, you should probably just get the Double action IMO.

You could look into one of the shrouded hammer models, they offer the option of SA, without haveing the hammer that can snag.

If you can, try to find a S&W 342 .38+P with the Titanium cylinder. These are no longer made, so it might be hard to come across; but they are awesome pocket revolvers weighing only 10.5oz. and they don't have the safety lock (little lock above the cylinder release). I have one and it is very comfortable to carry in the fron pocket; jeans or slacks.

I really like the 442 style for pocketr carry. no snagging at all, smooth triggerfor a doa. if you ever needed to fire it in a coat pocket, the hammer of a 637,bobbed or not may catch on the pocket. (no I don't plan on trying this out) luteai

I have found that with a slow deliberate trigger pull,I can shoot my J-frames just as accurately double action as I can single action!Another benefit of the 442/642 is that less lint and debris is able to enter the action.

Looks like they have a 637 at the gun shop down the road for $370. Is that a good price?

I love my 642. I have no qualms about the DAO. The trigger is smooth and firm. I have found it to be very accurate and just an absolute blast to shoot. It fits easily and carries comfortably in the front pocket of my jeans.

    I paid $414 for mine.
