If you look at a 125 grain Winchester Silvertip in .38 Super, you see muzzle velocity of 1240 fps and muzzle energy of 427 ft-lbs. This is quite similar to 9mm +P ammo performance.
True dat, but how easy is it to find .38 Super in a pinch? If all else fails you could pop in to Wally World for your 9 needs at a reasonable price, agree?

I have to side with Falcon1.....I carry a 9mm just how Browning intended for me to carry a 9mm......in a BHP. If I want a 45 I grab a 1911 if I want a 9mm I seduce my slickup hotter than a arkansas sidewalk in june Browning and jiggle as it slides flawlesly into that Don Hume (temporary) holster.

    Oh well, guess I'm spoiled.

I love the BHP, but the 1911 in 9'er is a real good vibe. I think the extra slide mass is what makes it such a sweat ride. If you never tried it before you really should!

The .38super is a very underrated round that was developed back in the 20's because the .38 wasn't penetrating the cars that the B/G were shooting from. Loaded to it's full potential it's a real smoking round. It lost popularity for awhile then started making a big come back as a competition round and gained a following as a very accurate and viable round. The newer hot .9mm round that several makers are putting out makes a .9mm a contender with it's bigger brothers.

    Maybe convert a .38 Super 1911 to 9mm?

You are correct that .38 Super practice ammo is more expensive and not as readily available as 9mm, if you are buying new commercial ammo. Production of 9mm ammo in the world is probably 100 times as great as production of .38 Super, which may be the reason for the price difference.

So that might provide a motive to convert a .38 Super 1911 to 9mm caliber. I have read a number of threads on the 1911 forum discussing this, and it seems that for an investment of about $200 in the correct barrel, bushing and magazine you can do this. There are many used .38 Super guns on the market, and such a conversion would allow you to shoot the cheaper 9mm practice ammo, as well as the hot new 9mm defensive ammo.

I have a .38 Super 1911 for which I have considered this move - a Colt Gold Cup Elite, shown below:

Got the t-shirt. I have nothing against 9mm at all. I just don't have a need for anything in that caliber at the moment. There was a time when I was forced to carry nothing but 9mm. Through that experience, I have since developed a well-founded personal preference for larger calibers. I like them all though. I have a snubby in .38 and have had several 9mms, .380s, and .32s. As for why I don't care for the 9mm in a 1911, I would have to say my reasoning is nostalgic. I like the BHP for a vintage-design 9mm.

My other reason, as previously stated, is that I haven't the dies to reload 9mm. I only have .38/.357, .44, and .45 ACP for pistol reloading.
