Today was the big day. All the planets were aligned just right... tax check, recent CCDW license, blessing from wife, several months of research, TIME TO GO SHOPPING!
The town I live near has one "sporting goods store" which carries guns and a pawn shop. The sporting good store had zilch for pistols and the pawn shop... well I wasn't looking for a $200 deal on a used Jennings so it was time for a road trip.
Fifty miles north-northwest to Paducah, KY. The stores: Elite Firearms, Mike's Guns, Dunn's Sporting Goods, Gander Mtn, Shooter's Supply.
Elite Firearms: Friendly, helpful folks. Black rifle paradise. Not a lot of handguns. A Glock 26... meh. Keep going.
Mike's Guns: Very small selection. Extremely helpful and enthusiastic. Willing to order anything. Pretty good prices. I wasn't interested in a Taurus PT111 so I kept going.
Dunns: Could it be? XD Heaven. Very friendly and helpful. Guy offered to hold an XD-9 subcompact for me until I finished my gun store tour.
Gander Mtn: Nice Kahrs. Expensive. Busy, so I didn't interact with sales guy. Some CZ's. No RAMI, though.
Shooters' Supply: An enigma. Huge selection. Nice owners (I've met them before and took my CCDW class there) but salesfolks are rather surly. Had some XD subs. One 9mm all black but I liked the two-tone one at Dunn's a bit more... liked the attitude a lot more. They were real busy, though, so I'm not complaining.
Back to Dunns for the XD-9. I have to say I was hoping to find a CZ 2075 but I love the XD-9 subcompact. Beautiful trigger.
Threw down my CCDW license and skipped the background check. I love Kentucky.
Stopped at Elite on the way back out of town and picked up a little IWB holster. Going to the range at the Land Between the Lakes tomorrow with about 350 rounds of Winchester white box and some older Federal Hydra-shocks that I recently replaced with newer stock. If it passes the test, I reckon I may have found a daily carry replacement for the full size EAA Witness 9mm.
Don't get me wrong. I've had that Witness for about thirteen years and have yet to have had a single failure of any kind. It's just a little bulky and I've been lusting after something smaller in the 9mm flavor.
All things considered... a great day.

What a great day! Congrats.

I forgot to say that Mike's Guns in Paducah had a Russian SKS with the prettiest stock I've ever seen. Not laminated or anything, just a gorgeous finish. Nicest (and cleanest) looking SKS I've ever seen.
I think it was $269 on the tag.
Congrats on purchasing the XD...post your range report whenever you can.

Sounds like fun, not much better then a ture of gun shops.

Congrats on the XD. My wife's next gun may be an XD so I look forward to the range report.

Good choice with the XD! I've got three and love them. Looking forward to a range report.
Sounds like you had a busy yet enjoyable day. Congrats on the XD!
You'll love your XD, as I love my XD45. I love being able to skip that background check with the CCW. We can do that here in Nevada too. So get to the range and enjoy!
Sounds like a fulfilling day. Got to look at guns and than bring home a new family member.

Congrats on the XD! Can't wait to hear your range report.
I hope you love yours as much as I love my XD9sc!
It's not about the caliber you carry, it's about how you USE it.

Do you have a 40 XD 3" I just got one and will like to get some feed back on it...
Thaks and have a good one!
Congratulations on the XD and a generally great day. The XDs I looked at all felt great in my hands and you rarely hear of people having troubles with them - other than the old finish and that was taken care of when SA switched to using Melonite across the board. I'm sure you'll love the new noisemaker.
on the new gun, and one question...
Did you say 'skip' the background check, or that you didn't have to wait...
I thought the check (a phone call to the Fed's) was done in every state...just some state's exclude any days of waiting if you have a CCW permit...
