..when I'd recommend a Desert Eagle for a carry piece.
Long story short, on another forum, a guy was asking for advice on a carry gun. No revolvers, but needed power to take down a mountain lion (for hiking trips and such). Now here's the tricky part; he wanted something with low perceived recoil.. And by low I mean, the guy felt a bit uncomfortable shooting a 9mm (he didn't specify what gun). Aside from the best solution (get used to heavier recoil), the only thing I could come up with was to recommend a big, heavy gun like the Desert Eagle, that'll have plenty of power, but will have very low recoil due to the mass of the gun.
Was my recommendation alright? I know the DE isn't exactly easily concealed, and you'll probably start walking funny if it's strapped to your hip for awhile, but I included that caveat in my reply.

Find me a semiauto that loads .454. ;)
Yeah, I want a 16oz gun that fires .50BMG out of a 1" barrel that is accurate to 1000m and has no recoil, too... Where can I get one?
Seriously, you should have pointed the guy to a physics text book. Everything in firearms is based on compromise - between bullet size and ammo capacity, between accuracy and concealability, between power and recoil. There is no such thing as a high caliber handgun that you can comfortably carry that has "low" recoil, it simply can't be done with current technology. The guy should "cowboy up" and get some training and experience, and he'll eventually come to know that recoil is manageable, even in heavy calibers, if you aren't shooting all day.
All that being said, the DE is a reasonable recommendation based on his unreasonable requirements...
A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.
seriously though, he's asking for alot. that's like saying "i want something that can go 0-60 in 4 seconds with a top speed of 220 mph, but it has to be fuel efficient." i don't know much about higher caliber guns (or lower caliber, to be honest) other than desert eagles are huge, heavy, obscenely loud, and expensive. from what i've been told, they're also impractical. wouldn't a .44 mag be just as good?
Honestly i would have went with a revolver downloaded in .44 or .45 Cats are fairly easy to take down being thin skinned and light , dammed near any load that you would carry for defense in say detroit would work fine on north american cats .

Criminals are looking for victims, not opponents.
If he is uncomfortable with the recoil of a 9mm then there isnt much out that he is gonna feel comfortable with. I think he needs more practice and familiarization with handguns in general.

I'd carry a desert eagle too...if I were 7'8" and weighing in at a good 570 lbs.

Are Desert Eagles .50 Cals?
If it is not in the US Constitution then the Federal Government should not be doing it.

I think Shaq carries a Desert Eagle whenever he is off the court serving as a Miami Beach reserve officer.

The logical step down would be a full size 1911 (maybe even a double stack from Para Ordinance), chambered for .45ACP. Those don't recoil as sharply as most wonder 9s.
