I've had no problems with my S&W 1911 for the 14 months I've had it. My ACT mags did develop hairline cracks in them, and these were replaced by S&W very quickly (it was a known problem with a bad batch of magazines from them).

I really don't think you could go wrong with either the SA or S&W. S&W does reportedly excel in customer service, so that may be a factor. Does either look better in your eyes? Does the external extractor of the S&W bother you?

    Worst case, flip a coin!

Good question on the external extractor. I don't know if it bothers me. What are the pros and cons of an external extractor?

^ People look at the external extractor in the following ways:

    1) The original design was for an internal one, so it is an uneccessary modification to the design. Also, many are adept at tuning the internal extractor, which they won't be able to do on the S&W.

    2) There have been failures with the external extractor design. Yes, this was true with Kimber, causing them to go back to the internal design. But S&W has been making external extractors for many years, and appear to have mastered them for the 1911.

    3) It doesn't look as good. Well, this is purely subjective of course.

I've been extremely happy with my S&W "Gunsite" model. It has run 100% reliably.

I made my decision and placed my order for a 5" SW1911 with the tactical rail (model 108303). I'll post a range report once it comes in.

Thanks to everyone for your help!

I picked it up yesterday and it is real pretty. The pic on budsgunshop.com showed it with rubber grips which I had already decided would be replaced. Thankfully I hadn't bought new grips because I opened the box and it had beautiful wood grips. I started a new thread with pics and a range report, when I get out to the range. Thanks again for everyone's help.
