Thank you for the info as I want a 1911. Who does'nt.
Thanks, OP! I ran it through your tests with one exception and one addition.
except: let slide forcibly go forward - my owner's manual does say : no,no,no!
add-on: the pencil test
Did this with my brand new SA 1911 Loaded after I disassembled it to clean it up. Going to the range tomorrow for the first time! Yay.
PS-this Springfield passed the half-cock test, must not be a series 80.
Great timeless informational guide. Thank you!
On my field stripping video, I included the two most basic safety tests: thumb safety and grip safety: field stripping the 1911 video, Here is a chapter two video, featuring those safety/function tests.

Thanks, man, appreciate it.
Good info...glad I found it. I just got a 1911 and will do this as it may be a CCW at times. Thanks!!!
Nice reminder, I check my 1911 Springfield hi=cap !Nice illistrations ! I check my pistol every time I picked it up as I trust no mechanical safety.
I liked the link presented in the beginning post. It's good, useful information.
Every 1911 owner should adhere to the safety checks. Great info, Not seen this one before all in one place.
I'm cool with the Series 80 FP block system, but the lack of the sear-capturing 'safety notch' felt weird compared to a '70. An upgrade to an Ed Brown hammer solved that. Other than that, good stuff. I've been familiar with these checks on 'ol slabsides ever since I was a pre-teen. One of those types who has to know how everything works.
Thanks for the excellent post!
Edit to add: The pencil test is important on a Series 80 equipped gun. An additional check for proper function of this system is this:
With the slide locked back, use the point of the pencil (or a paper clip) and depress the firing pin as if you were going to remove the FP stop. The pin should NOT extend past the breech face. If it does, it indicates worn or missing parts.
Hope I made this clear and understandable. It's 3:25 AM and I haven't had my coffee yet.
