As far as IDPA goes, I doubt you'll notice much difference between a Glock, XD or M&P. However something you should know, a XD is considered a "single action" pistol and shot in the same class (for times) as 1911s and BHPs, where the Glock and M&P are considered to be Stock Service Pistols. Dosent really make much difference but you'll typically find yourself up against the more experienced or stiffer compitition in the 1911 catagory.

[Now, I'm a .45 guy. Love the round and 1911's. I really don't want to carry/shoot a 9mm. I have this mental perception of the 9mm being a wimpy round. If I purchase a 9mm for CC I will have it loaded with Speers so that will help the stopping power.]
It looks to me as though you have all ready answered your own question about the caliber you need. If you don't have full confidence in the 9mm round for self defense then you don't need to be carrying it. I hope this helps a little in the decision process.
