I am contemplating purchasing a Smith & Wesson M&P compact 9mm and wonder what else I should consider of similar size? Just looking to make the right choice for concealed carry and want super reliable quality. Based on your recommendations, I will rent each and decide which is the best "fit" for me. I just don't want to overlook anything in my search. I want a carry gun that is durable enough to also be a range gun (so that I can consistantly practice).
Thanks to all who respond.
Try a HK USP compact in 9mm. HK makes a very high quality firearm and the USP line has proven itself to be very reliable over the test of time. I also looked at the M&P but the USPc just fit my hand better with the slightly longer grip.
Both the Glock g26 and the xd line of compacts are similar platforms and price range as the M&P compact. I too am looking to purchase a weapon in this class and based on what I've heard and how they feel have decided on the M&P, but you can't go wrong with the other two I mentioned above either.

I have the XD9SC and love it!
I have shot the g26 and i like that also.
I have not shot an M&P .
unlike the G26 and the M&P the XD has a grip safety also.
Might also look at the Glock G19 and the Kahr line.
I shoot the S&W M&P 40c, along with a XD 40sc. They are very close to the same size, but I did like the M&P 40c better. I was trying to also shoot the G27 (sub compact .40), which is the same size as the G26 (9mm), but the range did not have one at the time.
I think those are the three I would consider buying if I was looking for that size gun right now.

Current: DW V-Bob 1911, S&W 442, Springfield XD9sc, XDm9,
and Glock G26, G19, G23C, and SIG P226-40 TT, and Ruger GP-100, and Beretta 92FS
Former: Taurus 92SS, SIG P220 TT, S&W 360, SIG P239-40, Ruger 22/45 MKII
the P2000sk is another option. I have an M&P9c and like it.
Acroreef, if you can hold out till this weekend, I can take some pictures of my XD9SC and M&P9c for comparison.
I do not have the G36. Maybe I should think about filling this inadequacy?
If you're also entertaining non-polymer framed options, take a look at the Sig P239. It's a very well-built pistol from a topnotch manufacturer.
