I had to shoot a German Shephard once. I used a J-Frame S&W and one Winchester 158 gr. SWCLHP. I shot him in the chest and he turned and ran about 70 yards before collapsing. Not a drop of blood anywhere or a visible entrance or exit wound.

Since then I've taken to carrying Fed Labs MK-4 OC on my walks. I have sprayed 4 dogs with it and it stops them quicker than the .38 did, and hopefully educates them a little better.

+1 on this. The industrial size mace is a great thing to throw in a coat in addition to the sidearm.

lucky for us they were not very aggressive other wise I would never have been able to stop them without shooting them.

You mean,"Lucky for THEM" don't you?
Yeah, placement is everything, but Pits have REALLY thick skulls and sloped in front to boot.Personally, I would attempt a chest, high back or side shot if it were possible.
You can divert their attention momentarily by waving your weakside arm or throw something off to the side.
This may give you enough time to get a side shot.
Or just carry a few sirloins around and throw that at them.
They'll leave you alone!
