I'd stick with 9mm personally. In a SHTF situation to the extreme, you can find 9mm in most other countries. I like Glocks but they just don't fit some people, so the family as a whole should make a decision on which weapon to buy. Theres likely something out there that fits all of you. For a .45, I'd probably be getting some standard 1911's. Nice, accurate, heavy and all steel. Nothing modified, just a standard functional set of 1911's. For 9mm, take a look at some of the Witness models. I've seen lots of people handle those and never had someone dislike them.

Ditto. Good idea, but if everybody needs a pistol make 'em long guns loaded with light loads, and have everybody hole up in one room.

I thought .38s had stopped more bad-guys than any other?

It probably depends on whether or not you consider enemy combatants to be "bad guys." Personally, I would not. For the most part, they're serving their country just like we serve (or have served) ours.
Exclude them and I'm pretty sure the .38 would be on top in the U.S. at least. Worldwide it might well be the .32, as that has been a favored arm of foreign police departments for about a hundred years now.

If we include enemy combatnts then sharpnel has probably stopped the most of them.
