Northern Virginia People: What are some good gun stores around here?

I have been going to the store at Gilbert Arms/Range, but I was wondering if you guys knew of better places to look. They typically have higher prices than I am use to seeing (in South West Virginia). I figure this might just be a location thing (supply/demand) but I know some of you probably know where to go to find some cheaper prices.

I'd be willing to drive ~45minutes if they had awesome prices.

Also, any good stores near Richmond? I go down there about once maybe twice a month.

    Thanks

There was a place in Manassas I visited last time I was in the area...seemed to be good people, and they had a nice selection.

I think it was Virginia Arms, but I can't recall the name exactly.

Great stores in Manassas; Virginia Arms Company and Guns and Ammo. Both stores are terrific with great folks. G & A more welcoming in their approach; doughnuts and coffee etc; VA Arms very professional and direct. Both have great selection of a broad range of firearms.

    Good luck.

PS: I drive there from Fredericksburg. I used to go to Greentop in Ashland, more of a hunting/fishing store.

My vote for GreenTop. They have it all. Knowledgeable salesman, world class gunsmiths..

Loudoun Guns is in Leesburg. Good selection prices are fair. Staff is better than most places I've been.

Purcell's in Purcellville. One man show. Not much inventory, but will order most anything. Best price, but you need to know what you want. If you are into C&R stuff he has a fair bit of that. When I know what I want I go there and have him order it.

Blue Ridge Arsenal - Fairfax County/Chantilly. Last time I was there not much selection, they seem to price at retail. Haven't tried the staff I usually just use the range.

Virginia Arms in Manassass. Haven't bought there, but have shopped them. Fair prices, staff (I think it was the owner) was good.

Since I'm in Loudoun, Manassass is about as far as I go for gun shopping. By the time I buy gas and take the time to go elsewhere Loudoun Guns usually can make the deal for me. I listed the dealers in order as distance from me in Dulles.

I would second Green Top. I only shopped shotguns there and they knew their stuff, had a good to great selection and prices were good to fair depending on what you were after. A bit outside your 45 minute limit maybe. Not sure where you are relative to Gilbert's.

As has been stated a few times already Virginia Arms in Manassas is a great store with a friendly and knowledgeable staff.

Quantico Arms in Woodbridge is another good shop with great prices and staff.

GreenTop is actually closer to Richmond, but is within an hour or so from some areas in NoVA. It's like a hunting and fishing candy store with a great staff and selection. They have racks and racks of long guns right in the aisle so you can check them out as you shop. Lots of reloading supplies and equipment too.

Other stores in the Richmond area you might want to look at are DeGoff's in Mechanicsville, Bob Moates in Midlothian, and Town Police Supply just down the street from Moates. Go a little further south into Colonial Heights and Dance's Sporting Goods is like a mini GreenTop.

You guys know anywhere good near Lynchburg?

Well, there are a few in town, and several within 60-75 minutes.

    In town:

Ace Hardware and Gun Store - tend to be reasonable on some prices, ever-so-slightly under retail on others. Largest shop in Lynchburg, most folks are knowledgeable, all are nice.

Riley's Outdoor Sports - Brand new shop, hardly any inventory yet. Last time I was there, he had one pistol in the case - an old Colt 70 series with a magwell and scope. Yeah, I don't get it either. I believe that the owner's family works the business, so sometimes you will see youngun's running around. They tend to cater more to the bow hunter, with some other sporting goods - baseball, tennis gear - and firearms as an afterthought, at least for now.

Lynchburg Pawn - Full disclosure, I work for the guy that owns this place. They've got one glass case with pistols in it, and a rack or two of long guns. Overall, not much selection, but hey, it's a pawn shop. It's well worth dropping by once every so often to see if there's a gem.

    L. Oppleman - Another pawn shop in Lynchburg. I've never set foot inside the store, probably due to my current employment. Right in the middle of downtown.

A&A Supply - This place is about 25 minutes north of town, in Amherst. They have a decent collection of handguns for sale, and stock a LOT of varied ammunition. Half of the store is firearms related, the other half bow. Good guys to talk to, but usually busy and won't give prices over the phone.

Bill's Guns - About 30-35 minutes south of town, in Gretna. Nice little store, run by Bill and his wife. Good selection of handguns, as well as ammunition. Darn pricey though, but the only place in town that I've seen that keeps NAA mini revolvers in stock. I believe Bill still smokes in the store, as well. If you buy a gun from him, you can usually take it to his outdoor range behind the store and test it.

Roanoke Firearms - Just over an hour away, this dealer has a very large selection of new and used handguns. The shop is split with a pawn shop, so the gun side of things is very crowded. They do a lot of LE dealings, and there are patches on the wall from neighboring and visiting LEOs. If you go at a quiet time, you can poke around for quite a while and every time, find something interesting. If you go when they're busy, God help you unless you've got a wad of cash or a credit card in your hand.

Trader Jerry's II - Yes, II. The first one is a bit too far from Lynchburg to include, so I won't. This one is run by the son of the fellow that started it all. This store is located in Salem, VA, just on the other side of Roanoke. I really, really like this store. It's nice and quiet, very professional, but not high strung. The last time I was there was to buy my P-3AT. I got a screaming deal on it, and while the paperwork was being entered, I looked around and found all kinds of things that were on my "to fondle" list - several Stag Arms lefty AR's, a Kel-Tec SU16C, and even a S&W 460 survival kit (that thing scared me - I would not want to have to have my hands reattached after firing that!). They do a lot of gun shows in the area, so they are fairly well known and move stock very quickly. Overall, this is my preference - my XD and Kel-Tec came from this shop.

PSS Range and Training - The only indoor range that I know of within an hour of Lynchburg. They have 8 or 10 lanes, up to 25 yards. Outside ammo is ok, but you've got to buy their targets - $.75 for a B-27 . The employees smoke in the shop, so I try to go as early in the day as possible, when there's one person working and it's still breathable. They stock mostly Springfield and Taurus, with a spattering of other guns thrown in. I was there on Wednesday, and the fellow behind the counter told me they had turned EIGHT Springfield EMP's since they were introduced, and had a pair of Dan Wesson Commander Bobtail's in the store not more than a week prior. They seem like a pretty good group of folks, but prices are on the unreasonable side.

Izaac Walton League - the local outdoor range/complex, in Madison Heights - just north of Lynchburg. The membership fees are $175/year, plus you MUST be an NRA member. I haven't taken the jump yet, since I live on 12 acres of agriculturally zoned land that I can legally shoot on.

I hope this helps. Are you and Lima moving down here? I'd love to meet up with you guys and take you on the grand tour... having lived here for about 3 years myself, I'm no local, but I know what's important to folks just showing up.

Virginia Arms. I think I will buy my next gun from them regardless of the distance it took to get there (45 minutes--stupid dc traffic).

Honestly, since Fredericksburg Gold and Pawn stopped selling guns I either get them from a gun show or online. I did do a trade at Combat Solutions in Fredericksburg, but for the most part Dark Sun gets my business at the shows.

Pretty far from you, but the hands down best prices I've found in VA are at Trader Jerry's in either Claypool, or Salem. The have Glock, Springer, Kimber, Les Baer, Wilson Combat, Beretta, Sig and many others, all in stock. They seem to be able to get about anything on the market.

Another good one is Roanoke Firearms in Roanoke. They carry Wilson, Glock, Nighthawk Custom, Kimber, Colt.... They also carry a full line of Blade Tech and Blackhawk accessories.

Both are great to deal with.
