    Springfield EMP: 9mm, .40SW or .45GAP

I'm ordering an EMP and was wondering if anybody had any experience with them and if they have compared the different chamberings.

I carry a .40 (Glock 23) now (for the two weeks I've had my permit), but I love a 1911.

Bud is right. All that is out now is the 9mm. However I can't believe it will be long before a 40SW is out if you can wait. I feel more comfortable with the 40SW than the 9mm, but opinions very.

Everything on the EMP was designed for it to be a .9mm and to my way of thinking it fills a nitch in the market. There are plently of .40S&W, and .45acp to fill that need. There's not a lot of .9mm in the compact 1911 line up.

    SubMOA,

Instead of the 45 gap EMP (???) why not the Springer 45 Micro Compact? "ALMOST" exact same gun as the 9mm EMP but with 45 cal kick and no gap BS. I love mine!

Acutally the EMP started out as a 45gap in what they were calling a defender

I also have the Springer Lt. Wgt. Micro Compact and it's a dream to carry, its a handfull with full house defensive loads but more than tolerable wish they would have done something with the front strap cause its smooth and your hand moves on it when firing but I wouldnt feel bad having the 9MM for carry either.

I'm struggling with the decision to get an EMP or a Kimber Aegis. I'll probably have to have them side by side in order to decide. On the other hand, I could resolve the dilemna by just buying both.

Could you stipple the front strap or would grip tape help?

I've been leaning toward a .45 even carried a friend's ultra carry for a day and loved it.

Just thought the thinness of the emp would be nice.

It was my understanding that the EMP was designed as a 9mm weapon. I feel a bit uneasy selecting a 1911 designed for one caliber but chambered in a bigger caliber. Going in reverse from big to small seems alright, but small to big...

Well according to Springfield' website and catalog, the EMP was designed for cartridges shorter then the .45, calling it a "short" action 1911.

    From Springfield's catalog, P. 23

    GRIP CIRCUMFERENCE COMPARISON
What did it take to create the smallest, most concealable 1911 you can buy? Quite a bit. The new Enhanced
Micro Pistol (EMP) design enhances the legendary 1911s performance with shorter cartridges like 9mm and
40 S&W. This allowed us to shorten the frame by 1/8 inch. This
seemingly small change in the front-to-back
dimension creates a remarkable reduction in grip circumference.

As far as going from changing a smaller gun to a larger caliber, most or the .40s out there are based off a 9mm frame and slide IIRC.

What surprised me most is the poll shows most would prefer the 9mm over a .40. Everyone I talk to in my area want a .40 or .45 for carry and wouldn't consider carrying a 9mm.

Maybe I should just buy both:)
But then I wouldn't be able to make up my mind on which to carry!

    Thanks for sharing your opinions!!!

In a time long ago, I might be inclined to shy away from 9mm ammunition compared to other calibers. In this modern day of technology, you are certainly not undergunned with a 9mm weapon. Human physiology is complex enough that, for a defensive weapon, shot placement must count regardless of caliber, and it doesn't take much to turn a human off.

On the EMP, I keep hearing good things about it, but a grand? It's pretty but I can't convince myself to spend that kind of money when there's so much else on my plate.
