A good friend is getting his first handgun for concealed carry. He is handgun knowledgeable, not a newbie. He is considering a Glock, either a .357 SIG or 10mm. I'm a bit concerned about those choices due to overpenetration and liability issues and I'm suggesting other calibers. What do you think? Am I on the wrong track? Thanks!
The 357 Sig is basically a 9mm Magnum. The 10mm is basically a 40 cal magnum. The 357 is shorter and carries in a double stack mag better. Personally I dont like either, but since I carry a 357 Sig as an issued weapon, I have more experience with it than the 10mm and would likely choose it over the 10mm.
May wish to point the EXPENSIVE ammo for his two choices. 9mm or 40S&W would be my recommendations. If he wants to buy himself a .357 barrel and use it to shoot .357's in his 40S&W Glock, he can do so & he'll have two guns in one ! Don't even need other mags !

I'd go with the .357Sig because when he tires of searching for and spendy all his loot on ammo, its a easy switch of a barrel and he's got a .40.

For carry. Thats a hard decision as both are quite powerful rounds.
I personally like the 10mm, but for CARRY I would probably choose .357 Sig because I think I would shoot it better.
Which brings up an additional question of mine.....
What is the real difference between 9mm+p+,
and .357Sig in terms of velocity, energy.. the different parameters, etc..
Just a side note, no one has to really answer my question, sorry for being slightly off topic and adding my own question.
If he can handle it and shoot it well, go 10mm, but that is only if he can. 10mm is not a good round for every person.
I had a GLOCK 32 in 357Sig and yes, the ammo is getting expensive, but then again, so is all ammo..I would highly recommend the 32..I was surprised as the "kick" was not what I expected at all. Much tamer than I thought it would be especially from a plastic gun. I sometimes worried about the overpenetration factor as well..but I've heard both sides of the argument. Go for a 32..great gun and an interesting caliber!
Regarding concerns of hitting innocent bystanders, I care more about the rounds that miss than those that overpenetrate.

Actually, the 10 MM is about the meanest baddest round that you can carry in a gun that is still a practical size.
When some drugged up ex felon that feels no pain trys to pull you though a car window, the 10 MM is a nice gun to have.
Although I dont currently own one, I can see me owning a Glock20 in the not too distant future.
There both effective calibers for self defense, but they're both expensive. He'd probably be better served by getting a more common caliber and shooting it a lot more. I wouldn't worry too much about overpenetration (provided he uses quality hollowpoints).
There is a wide variety of self defense ammo for both. If it was me, I'd take the 10mm - makes a bigger hole.

The .357Sig pistol and an extra .40 S&W barrel is enough to make me lean toward the .357. However, both the .357Sig and the 10mm are hard to find and rather expensive. Is there any reason why he is not interested in a .45 or 9mm?
