Of the candidates you mentioned, I would probably pick the Sig P229 for the combination carry and IDPA use. I have the P229 in .40 and the P226 in 9mm, and feel that the P226 is a little large for concealed carry. The P229 is compact enough to be easily concealed, but is a fairly heavy gun (32 ounces empty) with a very good trigger. It is easy to shoot it accurately, which makes it good for IDPA. It would also give you a 12 round magazine (in .40), which is handy for both carry and IDPA.

The 1911 EMP and Sig P239 are good carry guns, but a little small for IDPA, in my opinion. And the full size M&P 40 is also a little large for concealed carry and doesn't have as good a trigger as the Sigs.

The P229 is a great all around pistol that if you had to have only one pistol to do it all, it would be a good choice.

I bought one when they first came out and still have it.

The P239 is an excellent size for CCW, and the P226 for IDPA, so I would have to say if you can only get one I would say the P229 since I know how good my SIGs have been in the past.

I would highly recommend that you shoot any you are considering and see WHICH ONE YOU LIKE THE BEST!!! I mean ultimately it is what you think best works for you, not me.

I would ask in which condition are you going to have more time with the gun:

    1. Concealed Carry?

    2. IDPA/Range?

The next pistol you get does not have to be the last you get, does it?
