Hello, great forum.
I have a new Ultra CDP II. I have put 200 rounds through it, cleaning and oiling every 50 rounds.
Every 50 rounds or so, the slide stays locked open despite the clip not being empty. Any ideas?
Thanks

probably the mag.
kimber mags arent too great.
unfortunately nobody else makes them for mine, but lots of ppl make them for yours! try getting a non kimber mag and see if it helps
I agree with friesepferd, it's probably the mag.
Try a Wilson Combat, Chip McCormick or Tripp Research Magazine. I would go for either Wilson or Tripp before Chip, however.

I agree with Limatunes. I have a 4" 1911, the Chip McCormick mags didn't work well for me. Kimber mags have a rep for not working well.

I would suggest using some Wilson Combat magazines.
You know, that's really odd that a company like Kimber would ship their guns with inferior mags - I've heard several manufacturer reps on Gun Talk say that the mags are key to semi-auto function.
I'd bet it's the bean-counters at Kimber who are trying to squeeze the last penny out of their profit margins.

I know that some folks speak harshly of Kimber mags, but mine have never given me a problem...
After about 200 rounds, my Kimber Ultra CDP II has been flawless!

Thanks for the tips. I have ordered a Wilson mag, will see if things improve.
Also check the slide stop. It may be that your ammo is contacting it occasionally and bumping it up into place, especially if you're running 230gr ball practice ammo. If the new mags don't work, look at that, the fixes are easy and cheap. Switch to a 185gr or a flat point while you wait for delivery.
I just purchased a Kimber Pro CDP II (1911). I am having the same problem with the slide locking back with rounds still in the mag. I put 50 rounds of 185 gr wadcutters through it using the factory mag and the 8 round kimber tactical mag I purchased - No problem. Then using the tactical mag and 185 gr winchester jacketed rounds, I put 50 rounds through. One time - using the 8 round tactical mag - the slide locked back with 3 rounds left in the mag. Also one time using the kimber mag that came with the gun it locked back again with 3 rounds in the mag - this time shooting fedral hydroshock 230gr. The gun shot great except for these two glitches in 110 rounds fired. It shouldn't happen with the factory mag that came with the gun., should it?
Remember the Kimber factory recommended break in period:
From the Kimber manual:
Fight your way through the problems for the specified round count, if you still have issues, that's when the trouble shooting needs to start.BREAK-IN PERIOD
Before firing the pistol for the first time, Field Strip
and clean the firearm following proper procedures.
(see DISASSEMBLY, CLEANING and LUBRICATION
and ASSEMBLY Instructions in this Manual)
Kimbers firearms are quality custom pieces. Our
firearms are hand fitted to tight tolerances. For
proper Break-in of the firearm shoot 400-500
rounds of Quality Factory Ball (230g. FMJ)
Ammunition, cleaning and lubricating the gun every
100-150 rounds.
*Excerpt from Kimber manual is from the manual for a 5" Kimber.
Check your manual for your firearm incase Kimbers recommendation varies from model (barrel length) to model.
I have also heard of people's thumbs actually pushing up the slide release when gun is under recoil, especially with the smaller guns that tend to recoil a liwttle more than full size. Don't know if that is from the gun hand or support. From gun hand I would imagine. May not hurt to check this out as well.
+1 on the Wilson mags.
