    Custom Springfield GI no more

Customer sent me his bone stock SA GI. He was after a reliable carry and duty gun. Some of the modifications made were,

    Yost Retro Rear Sight
    Kings Tappan Front Sight
    Wilson Thumb Safety
    Match barrel bushing
    Wilson Bullet Proof Extractor
    STI sear
    Nowlin Commander Hammer
    STI titanium strut
    S&A Checkered Main Spring Housing
    S&A .220 Radius Beavertail
    Front Strap 25 LPI Checkering
    Midnight Blue Refinish
    Nowlin Extended Extractor
    Target Crown on Barrel
    OnTarget Slide Logo
    Wilson Bullet Proof Firing Pin
    EGW Firing Pin Stop

Nice looking rework to a work horse pistol. I really have a thing for blued pistols with nice cocobolo grips. This one has 600 grit brushed slide flats and satin blue everywhere else. It will be holster carried as a duty gun so I am sure it will get "character" very soon. I must apologize for the quality of the pics. I have a new camera and just cannot seem to get the focus and light settings right, but I am getting closer. I have a kind of light box built and plenty of the right light, just cockpit error.

Nice gun. The logo seemed a bit of "guilding the lily" though.

Your photos may not be engineering detail quality - but they have a certain atmosphere. Sometimes you just DONT need to see the detail.

    Well done all around.

Jess...I am really liking these carry guns that you are doing that do not shout custom but are subtly action packed with great common sense modifications. They are demurely beautiful.

Thank you. I am partial to the logo. It really is pretty small and at least lets you know who built the gun. No different than the "JOHN"S CUSTOMS!!!!!!" that some people put on the dust cover of the custom guns they do. It's only about the size of a dime. There are people out there that pay $1800 on top of the price of a 1911 just to get a logo put on their gun by someone. This gun's total for custom work including labor and parts was less MUCH less than $1800. About $800.00 or so if memory serves. Maybe less.

There I go, preaching on my soap box again. I just think that some people charge too much for custom work, but then again, it is what the traffic will bear. There are 4 year waiting lists out there for 5-10K 1911s. Not in my house, though it would be nice! Those smiths have worked YEARS to get the reputation they have and deserve to get good prices for their guns. We are really talking about people buying almost a piece of art and history when they buy some of those guns. ALL of the guns I build are working guns, tools if you will. I have only built one really fancy HP and I have one 1911 that I am working on that is pretty "guilded" but then again, they are fun to build.
