Just got a Taurus. +P? Problems?
I just bought a Tauraus .38 special ultra-lite. I was wondering if anyone knew if I can shoot +p ammo in this? There was nothing in the instruction manual, but it's a model 85 with a 2" barrel, hammerless design. I can't even find the exact gun on their website. Anyway, it's a great feeling gun and it's light. Also does anyone know of any major problems people have had with the ultra-lites?

The Taurus catalog sure says you can. Just happen to have one handy.. My grandmother has one and loves it, as do I. I know of at least 1K rounds that have been through it and no problems. Just the normal cleaning and such. And yes, I've put +p rounds through it.

I have the same gun and I use +p and haven't had any problems....you can definitely tell the difference between regular and +p though with the ultralite!

I will support gun control when you can guarantee all guns are removed from this planet. That includes military and law enforcement. When you can accomplish that, then I will be the last person to lay down my gun. Then I will carry the weapon that replaces the gun.

I called Taurus
and asked this question. They told me that the ultralite models are not rated for +P. I am not trying to be the devils advocate.
Just wanted to know if you called did you get the same answer?
thanks.

Good thinking SA-XD4ME! I did not call. But after re-reading the manual I did find a passage that said +P and +P+ ammo "May effect the useful life of the firearm or exceed the margin of safety built into many revolvers and could therefore be dangerous".
Looks like many people do use +P ammo in these though.

Most manufacturers are compelled to spell this out in their manuals. It's a liability, legal, thing. Of course the use +P ammunition is going to degrade the service life of any pistol, if used entirely, over time.
Only H&K have warranted the use of +P and +p+ ammunition in their manuals for their pistols.
If your not putting 10,000 rounds a month of +P ammunition through the pistol, then it's kinda a moot point. Just shoot a cylinder or two or mag or two each time out at the range to familiarize yourself with the sharper recoil.
NOTE: I'm not Taurus, so my comments cannot be held agains't me .

When it doubt get the low recoil hydroshocks. They'll do the trick. Plus P's aren't a necessity.

I have also found out that..
even with my 32H&R magnum, if I shot 32 Longs in it, that when I shoot the magnum rounds in the gun the casses get stuck in the cylinders.
I have also experienced this with 357 and 38 rounds.
But I have also seen this with .38's shooting .38 +P rounds. The casings swole up and were had to get out of the cylinder.

Well, like I said the Taurus catalog says you can, even on the ultralite models. Makes you wonder why Taurus would say that over the phone.

I can but I don't
Mine shoots about a foot and a half high at 10 yards with 130 JHP +P in it. It shoots to point of aim with 158 and 130's.
