For those who CC a revolver....

For those who CC a revolver - From what I've seen the most common is the .38 special followed by some who CC a .357 Magnum.
Now, who all that CC's a revolver - carry other than the .38 or .357?

    Thanks in advance....

    Making ammo.
    I would think 357 would be more popular. I pack a 4" GP100 sometimes.

My wife carries a 442, so for commonality of ammo and price, we stick with 38s, and I carry a 340 with 357s. We have a small collection of 38s and 357s, including a lever action. There is, and probably will be for many years, a very good selection of 357 ammunition and guns, for training, defense and hunting at a resonable price.

Though the 44 special/magnum option is a bump up, and if I wandered in Grizzly country, I'd probably go that route, but my wife would not; frame size alone. Over penetration of 44 magnums in 2 legged predators merrits consideration in populated areas, though maybe some defense rounds have resolved that concern in 44 special.

During jacket weather I prefer my 3" 624 or 629. I typically load 44 spec in either. Been known to carry a 4" 686 with 357 mags loaded. Did that for quite awhile before I began accumulating other guns.

    Big bore CCW revolvers?

I believe you are asking if anyone carries a large bore revolver for CCW, such as a .44 special, .44 magnum, .45 LC or .45 ACP. There are certainly some of those available with shorter barrels and abbreviated grips for concealed carry.

I carry a .38 or .357 revolver sometimes, and have considered the larger bore snubbies but have not bought one. I do have 2 longer barrel revolvers in .44 magnum but these are too big for CCW.

I don't believe the larger bore revolvers offer any ballistic advantages over .357 magnum for personal defense against human attack, based on gel test and actual shooting data I have seen. But the larger bore snubbies are generally more expensive than .357s, are harder to conceal because of cylinder size, and involve very expensive practice ammo compared to .38 special. So I have decided to stick with .357 magnum as my top end for CCW revolvers.

But having said all that, this new S&W model 25 revolver with 3 inch barrel, firing .45 ACP with a moonclip, is sure an attractive piece if you have a spare $1000 lying around:
