now i dont really know if i got a good deal or skunked on a 1911

I just got a colt stainless 1911 that is early enough to not have a dovetailed front sight , i did not bother to look and see what series it is i assume 80 It comes with box papers ( including the warranty card ) and two set of grips , neither of which is standard , there is a set of nice
skip line dimond woods ( no i mean real nice ) and a set of rubber that is on it . The story goes that the guy that had it replaced grips and shot it about half a box ... Yea i heard that too , but this pistol shows no signs of having been cleaned ever , and dont show wear . I wont pick it up for a couple of weeks due to the trade issue with a dealer since at the same time i put a couple of guns on consignment and we will work that into the deal . Ill tell ya tho guys its a stainless colt 1911 with a set of custom woods that i figure are in the 150 to 175 range and all for a cash price of 650 . I jumped on it , and may well end up into the pistol for less than 500 when its all said and done . Bubba be happy today , and pics to follow when i eventualy pick it up , heck if it dont shoot to nm standards ill turn it online and pass a bargen on .

Well, I for one am very very bitter.
Deals of this sort ALWAYS happen to other people. Not to me. And I can assure you, I am very deserving. Very very deserving....
Congratulations. It sounds like an excellent deal.

Chief's dont be bitter . Ill clean up the trigger on it and then if it wont slow fire into 2" at 25 ill sell it , I promise you first dibs for what i end up in it and shipping to your dealer . Its a nice clean early stanless colt and i am not going to get the mill after it .. ill clean the trigger up a bit and see how it shoots and then either keep or sell , if i sell it will have new colt trigger parts as well , not the parts i worked on .

What kind of wood are those grips?

Those must be some kind of custom 1911 wood grips if they are worth $150 to $175. I just looked at Esmerelda's website and the most expensive 1911 grips I could find there were these bocote wood grips for $139:

Now if they were elephant ivory or mastadon I would believe $200 plus.

Can you describe these wood grips, and what kind of wood?

Street Price on a NIB Stainless series 80 Govt. .45 is over $750 , so you
    likely did well on Price.

Post pics when you get it!

Sounds good so far Bob - look fwd to some pics and shooting results.

Could be you scored pretty well - and at least if you don't keep it you should get money back or better.

early enough to not have a dovetailed front sight

$650.00 that's fair in the condition you say it's in.
A decent deal if it's a nicely fit Stainless Colt.
The nice exotic wood grips are always a plus.

On the grips guys i have a set of smooth dark grips that appear to have been cut out of the heart of the burl , and somehow they are re enforced enough that htey have been on 10 or better pistols , and oh yea they cost a LOT . but what the hell , at the time i was flush . I was honestly about to give them away on the pay it foreward thread , but then come this silver pistol lol . The set of woods that come with the pistol are by no means factory ... A farmer who had too much money to spend bought the pistol , and the grips , I am buying a blue box colt 1911 that is dammed clean , and if needed i will buy a proper set of grips for it to sell it . For POGO thanks for the image of the cute grips , but here and on all this we are talking burrled european hardwood , and the figure simply cannot be ordered today ... and yea the grips dont go if i sell the pistol lol .

Not bad for what you're getting, I bought my used 5" XSE for a little less, and it was just the gun and the box, no fancy grips

I went ahead and picked it up today , Ill see if i can get some pics up at some point . No time for a range run for a few days tho so i may well wait till after then and post on overall impressions .

Edited to add : A buddy just left with my spiffy set of grips i got on this deal and i didnt get pics . I just couldnt turn down a $100 bill, and a more conventional set of woods to put on the pistol . Ahh well at least i resisted the ingrates suggestions that i get rid of the pistol too . I am tired of getting 1911s that i dont even shoot before i trade them , and besides iirc i offered it here first if i decide i dont like it .
