Yes, for now, I would be betting that if Chavez has his way in the upcoming elections that he will be taking that 9mm away..an armed populace and dictatorships dont mix.. that being said go with the most popular 9mm around there.. glock isnt my favorite but if its widely available then thats the choice.
Glocks and Berettas are easy to find around here.
G17-19-26 and Beretta 92FS and PX4 Storm, Taurus 24/7 and Tanfoglio Force 99.
Parts are hard to find.
How about the newest model of the Beretta....the 90-two.
While I am not a Glock fan, I will echo most of the opinions. Go with a Glock, either 17 or 19 due to the availability of parts, especially since you are in Venezuela.
I personally would go with the M&P but understand how this option might not be ideal.
I suggested the XD9 Tactical. I forgot however to metion a 9mm carbine would work easily as well. A Kel-Tec Sub2000 in 9mm using Glock17 mags is an excellent choice as you can buy 17rd or 33rd factory Glock mags. Another choice would be a Beretta CX4 which will also use Beretta 92 magazines and if you either have a Glock17 or a Beretta 92 they can share the mags and ammo.
You'll get a more stable weapon and more velocity out of a 16 barrel compared to a 4 or 5 inch barrel.Just something to think about.
Glock 19 Is what I use for HD. After about 7000 rds I broke a trigger spring, but I could still fire it! evrything else still working fine. It's very dependable and I trust it.
Several have recommended the Glock 19. It is a nice gun, but the longer sight radius and higher capacity of the Glock 17 make it more suitable for HD and less suitable for concealed carry.
If Glocks fit your hand well, I'd go with a Glock 34 as first choice, with a 17 second. The 34 has a longer barrel for a bit more velocity and sight radius. I'd add night sights, and if budget allows a rail-mounted light/laser combo.
If you have to choose and get only a 9mm for home defense, wich handgun would it be?
Irrespective of whether just for HD or being carried, I would want the most reliable, controllable, solid firearm possible. Of course, if carried, it would need to conform to certain size/weight constraints. Otherwise, you can certainly have your cake and eat it, too, in this regard.
There are a lot of good 9mm designs out there. Glock, Smith & Wesson, CZ, SIG, Kahr, Heckler & Koch, and many others.
I chose the CZ P-01 9mm semi-auto pistol. CZ also makes the 75. Either one is highly reliable. Each is strong enough to last a long time with whatever ammo you use. The controls are easy to manipulate. I'm a lefty, and they support left-hand use of the controls very well, instead of making them so small and stiff that they're unusable. There is a good after-market supply of holsters and other gear for them. And many gunsmiths can be found that know the CZ line well.
In the end, it depends on what works best for you, fits you well, what you can shoot well, and what you are comfortable maintaining and using. As suggested, the availability of parts and gunsmiths would also be a factor to consider. Without shooting several and then deciding from there, it's hard to say what you'll like or dislike.
