The ubiquitous ''which one'' - one our favorite questions!! (Promotes plenty of opinions!).
The choice will be yours finally based on budget and what fits and shoots well - for you. All I will say is try all platforms you can but - if you are talking HD then do not go small. IMO large and heavy will mean controllability, capacity and strength ..... all valuable assets.
Personally I'd not consider any sub compacts or mouse guns for HD - make what you choose be versatile and reliable..

Why would you HAVE to choose a 9mm?
There are many that are good, couple that come to mind are G17, HK-USP and P30, XD9, Sig, etc. All good choices. Any specifics you looking for?

I vote for Monica Lewinsky's Ex-Boyfriend's Wife for President.....Not!
I'm not a betting man, but if I were, I'd guess that the Glock 17 and Glock 19 will win and place in this hypothetical question. But, we'll see...
I agree with Mr. P95 Carry,
A full size firearm gives tangible advantages in control. Some may disagree, but the addition of a Rail Light would be a good choice. Try several type of frame styles & actions. I lean toward striker fired, but that is primarily because my carry gun is as well. It also holds 17 Rounds. A lot of folks will lead you toward a 1911 style, but test drive several types & see what fits you.
The best handgun for home defense is the 12 gauge shotgun. Few of the reasons you want a 9MM for defense are valid at home.
While i have those, I would have to say that a full sized XD, HK, M&P, Sig, Beretta, Ruger, Baby Eagle, etc. would be fine as well. As mentioned earlier, for HD you probably shouldn't go small for comfort/capacity reasons. Try out a bunch and get the one that YOU shoot best.
I'm restricted to 9mm here in Venezuela (por ahora). I mean our "goverment", does not allow importations and says that .40S&W and .45ACP is "too much caliber" for us. Importations are also restricted, so 9mm Para is the easiest and biggest round i can get, I repeat "por ahora".
War is not the ugliest of things. Worse is the decayed state of moral feeling which thinks nothing is worth a war. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which he cares for more than his personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free. -J.S. Mill
Indeed a SIG 226 would suit very well - that is in fact my EDC for last 3 years.
Would depend on availability for you and budget of course.

Sig 226, no rail nothing hanging off if it that shouldn't be there.
Along with a Surefire E2e and an 870.

Here it is. My personal choice for 9mm home defense. Beretta 92.
XD9 Tactical or Service.

S&W 638, Ruger LCP, Kimber Ultra CDP
Your answer doesn't cover the shotgun question. In a house protection plan, long guns are a better bet. What about revolvers? Can you have a .357? Past the 12ga we use a .357 because it is 'simpler' to use among different shooters.
If you have to go to a 9mm auto, its what feels the best to you and yours. Depending on what part of Venezuela your in, if its hot and damp a full SS or composite weapon (S&W M&P, Glock, etc) is the best way to go. Go with what shoots best for you, fits your "safety" zone, and you will practice with. In all reality, most mainstream gun manufactures will get the job done, its what fits you that matters.
My SIG 226 Navy is my 9x19 HD gun.
I also have a .45 and a 9x18 in other areas of the house.
