    God Bless

I carry a 6 Shooter and a 5 Shot BUG when I'm on my "own time". I also carry a reload for each gun. At work I carry the "bottomfeeder" they issue me.

    Sig P220 with 7+1 +either one or two 8 rounders on the belt = 16 or 24
    Sig P226 with 17+1 Mec-gar and sometimes another 17 on the belt= 18 or 35
    Sig P228 with 13+1 and usually 17 on the belt= 31
If I am just going to the mail box or dropping off a video (not going in store) I will sometimes take one of the nine w/o a reload. The P220 never leaves home without a reload.

    I usually carry a Kimber Ultra. 7+1+7(1 extra mag) = 15
I also carry a Colt Dick Special regularly. 6+6(1 speed loader) = 12

I have always carried spare ammunition with any weapon I've ever carried. I have reloads placed with my home defense weapons. It does no harm, and in the unlikely event it's needed, it will really be needed.

Keltec P3AT .380 - 2 mags + 1=13 rounds It's a .380, I might actually need that extra mag. I always have an extra mag in case of issues with the mag that's in the gun.

CZ 40B .40 - 2 mags + 1=21 rounds I always have an extra mag in case of issues with the mag that's in the gun.

RIA 1911 .45 - 2 mags +1=19 rounds I always have an extra mag in case of issues with the mag that's in the gun.

I have never felt a need to carry more. The reason I say this is I honestly want to understand the reasoning behind carrying 30 or more rounds for self defense. If 15 is not enough, what is? Why stop at 40? What if you needed 41 rounds to stop the threat?

Not trying to be a smart A, I really want to know how one decides what the minimum acceptable number of rounds is.
My personal reasoning is that I've been taught to carry an extra mag or two, beyond what others would normally carry, due to the fact the Badguys read gun mags and know exactly what you're carrying and the mag capacity you have in it. I also work in an area that brings in some pretty questionable charactors at times.. and I listen to them as they talk about what they see in the gun cases.. So, with that in mind,, I'm just being preparded for any event..

    Springfield XD 45 Compact

    10+1 for carry = 11
    13-round spare mag = 13

    Total rounds = 24

    No BUG.

Good answer. I carry an extra mag in case I have mag failure.

I'm wondering if I should rethink my spare ammo supply.

    By that definition I carry hi-cap. Neat! I didn't think I did.

I carry my Wilson Combat 1911 behind my right hip with 8+1 loaded up and ready to go and have a spare 8 round magazine on my weak side for a total of 17 rounds.

And, no, I don't feel naked with less. I feel naked with nothing. As long as I have one round I have something.

It's kind of like that scene from Mission Impossible III when the gal asks Tom Cruise how many rounds he has left and his reply is, "Enough."

He steps around the corner and fires his last round into the bad guy, killing him.

I thought that was interesting but it mirrored my own thoughts on the matter a bit. I would prefer to have more ammunition but if I only have 8 rounds I'm going to make them count. Only when my gun goes empty and I'm left resorting to knives, pepper spray, my bare hands, my teeth and whatever else I can get my hands on (to include shoes, earings, rocks and cats) will I start to worry about whether or not I had enough to begin with.

I was just about to say what Lima did about "high capacity". I too normally carry 8+1 and another 8. The spare magazine for me though is primarily for mechanical reasons and not so much the extra 8 rounds.

When I think "hi-cap" I think 9mm's and .40's with 12 or more rounds in each magazine. One poster said they carried a total of 50 rounds! Now that's "hi-cap" carry folks! (don't step in to any deep puddles!)
    ALWAYS carry! - NEVER tell!

31 rounds. 16 in the pistol 1 spare mag in case of a mechanical failure.

Wife carries 9 rounds total. 4 in the pistol and 5 in a speedloader.

If either of us needed any more than that, we probably shouldn't of been in the situation that would require it. Or I guess brought better weapons.
Now, we must all fear evil men. But there is another kind of evil which we must fear most, and that is the indifference of good men.
