I have read and heard them done on the smiths', but a taurus could be a lil' different.

Yes, I've done it and it works great, and no you don't have to replace the hammer spring, also did some light polishing on the inside and it turned out to be a smooth acting revolver for a Taurus. My son now has it and loves it.
