If you like the 9mm, get good defensive ammo for it and that's it. I know 9mm it has been poopoed by many but then again it has been with us for over a century and killing people in places other than the US.
Besides you shoot till the threat ceases and not one single solitary shot because some "expert" said that this caliber or that bullet will "guarantee" you a 94.7% one shot stop. That BS unless is a 100mm HE shell shot point blank at the subject.
You have to make the shot when fire is smoking, people are screaming, dogs are barking, kids are crying and sirens are coming.

I think even my little Kahr MK9 Elite, if thrown with sufficient force and if it hits the BG's head in the right place, will not doubt take him out.

True, but don't forget that a .45, if carrying the same number of rounds, will be heavier than the 9mm and might pack more wallop. The tradeoff is that you'll get slightly less distance with the .45.

And don't even get me started on full-length shotguns.

Shot placement takes 1st place with me. If I hit someone in the eye with a B.B gun I bet I could incapacitate them long enough to get out of dodge. My .02? Either one. You need to choose the one you can handle with confidence.

Round placement is 1, 45 won't get smaller. Shoot the one that you can handle.

On the 9mm vs. .45 question, two of the members of my gym feel so strongly about their favorites that each one tatooed their favorite caliber on their arms.

Years ago the military replaced the .45 with the 9mm because to many people couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with the bigger calibre - especially true for some of the weaker sex. With that said the army went to the .45 from the .38during the Philippine insurection because the Moro warriors wrapped heavy vines around their bodies and many a GI got macheted because the .38 didn't stop the BG - the .45 would drop them. Without a doubt the .45 is the superior calibre but the weight and kick as a factor the 9mm may be the best choice - you can probably get more rounds on target.

carry as large of a caliber as you can comfortably carry and shot accurately...period...
I prefer my BG's with large holes.

Well I don't know if this will be of any help but here goes. My cousin is on the Richmond CA police force and several years ago he went on a drug bust. To make a long story short he shot one of the BG's several times with a 9mm = no effect BG shot back with his own 9mm and hit my cousin = cousin didn't feel a thing, adreniln rush. Outcome was that the BG lived so did my cousin ( thank god ) but now my cousin will not carry anything but a .45, seems that on that drug bust the BG's that were shot with .45's decided to take a dirt nap while those hit with a lesser caliber lived to spend their time in the "Gray Bar" hotel.
