    Ruger SP101

I have been considering picking one of these up to carry at time when my P239 wont work.........

I want to shoot 357's in it....

I would think 3" would be ideal but a little harder to conceal and the 2 inch may not give me a huge ballistic advantage over 38 special +P's

what do you guys think? How are something like a 357 CorBon DPX round in the 2 inch SP101? Should I go for the 3"?

If I get the 2 inch it will probably be carried at 1 - 2 O'Clock anyone else do this? the 3" at about 3:30 or so opinions on this?

I know its a lot of questions just interested in gathering opinions and suggestions.

I carried a 3" SP-101 for a while and then sold it to a good friend. It is a great gun but I have a DAO 3" GP-100 as well. I do carry my 2" DAO from time to time. Makes a great drop in the pocket revolver, especially not having the hammer spur.

Hello. If interested, here are some observations on the SP101 with the longer bbl as well as chronograph information from it:

I liked the sp101, I personally always thought it was a little heavy for carry though...

It's a good pistol , but if the 239 will not work thank the 3" 101 isn't . There is not enough difference in size and weight .

Without getting into a ballistics discussion I'd say go with the 3" and if you want to use magnum loads get the GP100 in 3'' if you don't want to carry a gun with a 4" barrel. My personal choice for .357magnum is the 4" GP100.

    SP101

My girl has one as her bedside gun, although in .38spl. The 3" is not too hard to hide, but I don't carry it up front like you suggest. I use my stock of 110gr +P+ in it and get good performance. My suggestion is to try some .38+P, some +P+, some medium power .357 and the full power stuff. Load the most powerful load you can control. I know a few people that carry the 145gr Silvertip ( a mild load) or the 125gr Gold Saber (true medium velocity stuff) in small .357s.

I carry a 3"sp101 .357 everyday. Bought it used and shined it up and it rides high and tight in a DM Bullard basketweave. Goes bang when you pull the trigger and never complains. If you find the right holster you can almost forget it's there......but not quite.

Here's one with the 125gr Nyclad +Ps... Doesn't see much use, but is a solid and capable revolver.

A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.

My SP 2" is IWB at 2 O'Clock. Loaded with Corbon 125g. 357s. The grip makes most 357 Ammo easy to shoot.

My wife has the 2 1/4 .357, with hammer. Talk about a sweet little shooter. It is very controllable with .357 loads. Nice quality, and the price is hard to beat.

I carry a 3" GP100 because I want the extra round and to take advantage of the better ballistics that the 3" Barrel gives me over the 2.25" Barrel.

The Ruger SP101 is the only smaller revolver that I would even consider shooting .357 Magnum in. I tested one back in the 1980's when they first came out and thought it was a great gun then, still do. If I was going to carry and shoot .357 Magnum in anything less than a 3" Barrel it would only be in the SP101.

For what it's worth, I'm on the lookout for a 2.25" SP101. Since I'm used to carrying a 4" N-Frame S&W I don't find the 3" GP100 or a 2.25" SP101 hard to hide. For Appendix Carry I would definately go with the shorter barrel if it was me.

My daily carry is the 2.25" model stoked (at present) with Buffalo Bore 158gr. GDHC's (19E/20).

I find the SP rides comfortably in D.M Bullard's Dual Conceal Carry IWB at 3:30. I now wear it at a more severe cant and farther forward than shown in the photo.

+1 for the 2" barrel. I had a 3" model. Good shooter with heavy 357 loads and light with .38. For a snub, I would go with the shorter barrel. However, if you can't carry the 239, find a small snub, like a j-frame and carry +P.
