I'm thinking about picking up a used S&W 1911sc that has the big billboard on the slide. I could see this really bugging me in the future. I think it's lasered in?
How feasible would be to have a gunsmith polish off or refinish the slide to get rid of the billboard (taking it acount that this is a scandium pistol)? Is it possible? If so, anyone have a guess at what it what roughly cost?

A good gunsmith (or even a marginal one) could do that easily. It would cost you a couple of hundred dollars or more since you would be paying for their labor and then the cost of refinishing. The cost would vary depending on what finish you want in the end. FYI the slide is just plain old steel, only the frame is scandium. The slide is no harder to work on than any other 1911 slide.

You could try to special order one (or have your gun dealer order one) directly from S&W with an unmarked slide. Some custom engravers used to do that.
I don't know if S&W will take care of you or not these days but Colt & S&W used to.

The new SC's as you know aren't "billboard". For the money to have the "billboard" removed, you could probably just buy a new one like this...
