    Help finding the right 9mm

I'm not a 9mm type of guy, but my son, who currently shoots a full size Tanfoglio, is looking for a compact (not mini-size) 9mm. He asked me for ideas, but I not that familiar with the current offerings in 9mm. His requirements:

    1. DA/SA
    2. hammer fired
    3. not a CZ platform or clone
    4. non-steel is OK
    5. prefers single stack
    6. NIB under $500

KelTec size pistols are too small, Rugers are too large, and most of the ones I can think of are too expensive on his budget. I first suggested a compact carry EAA Witness/Tanfoglio, but he wants 'something different'. Kids these days!

    Help me out, please.

The only one that I can think of is a Sig 239, but that doesnt meet #6.

Well a compact, single stack, hammer fired, Da/Sa seems like a Sig 239 or 225 is your only choice. Maybe I'm wrong. Both are awesome choices. If double stack is ok then the sig 229 and 226 are both options.

The Sig 239 fits, but as already pointed out, it cost more.

Nothing much in that price thats not a cz style in DA/SA. Look at the Smith 910 (double stack), or the Sig 239 (~$650).

Look at the Ruger SR9, the S&W M&P 9c (my choice), The Kahr in the cw series, all are DAO but fine guns in that price range.

CDNN has some S&W 3919s available. They are great little pistols!

Is Beretta still making the 92 compact? That might fit.

S&W might have something, like a 910 or 3913... but its pushing that price range a little for a NIB one.

    How about the Bersa's?

Check out the FNP-9M. Should fit the bill nicely. My young bride has the full-size model and it's a really great handgun, which, by the way, is now available in .45 ACP as well.

Kahr CW9: not the trigger action he's looking for (it's DAO, but a nice/smooth pull), but it's single stack and available for under $500.

    S&w 3913

The S&W 3913 meets the specification and can be bought used for about $500. It has a single stack 8 round magazine, aluminum frame, and weighs about 25 ounces. The gun is quite thin for easy concealment.

You can buy the S&W 908 for new under 500. THe 908 is a lot like the 3913 but not as well finished.

Glock 19. Most can be had for $480 w/standard sights NIB. I think you would have to do away with #2. Maybe a 1911 in the 9mm - most likely would have to be used. I think in that price range you may have to adjust at least one of your desires - maybe the NIB if all the others are important. jmo

How about a FM M-95 Detective? It is basically a Browning Hi Power with a shortened barrel. These are made in Argentina by FM, who makes guns under contract for FN, who makes the guns that are imported by Browning.
