    .50 cal 1911 pistol.

I noticed Guncrafter Industries is coming out with a .50 1911 type pistol. .50 GI to be exact, which seems to be a smaller cartridge than the standard .50.

Is this a new idea, or has .50 gotten more popular. The Desert Eagle was the only I have heard of. Also, is there a big difference between the .50 GI and the standard .50?

Since I am of the bigger is better camp, I was wondering if this would be a realistic alternative.

BTW I have no problem concealing a Sig P220, or full size 1911, so size isn't a big concern, unless it is Desert Eagle size, which is pushing my size limitations.

I think it is a novelty round more than anything. While on paper the .50 GI may edge out the .45ACP, it will never be as common to find ammo for. What is the standard .50 ,btw?

The standard has a bigger cartridge. It seems the new .50 GI was made smaller to make it easier to manufacture smaller pistols, mags, etc.

The one mentioned in my first post can be used as a .45 with different mag and barrel.

To my knowledge the standard .50 round in a pistol is the .50 AE

I would say a "standard" of .50 cal. would be .50 BMG, but he may mean .50 action express.

Man, you guys are rough. I was just going to mention that this all happened several years ago, and that ammo isn't available in stores. .50 GI, .50 WE, .50AE, .500 Linebaugh, .500 Linebaugh Maximum, .50 BMG, .50 Standard.

You're right - I've never heard of the last one either. I think its safe to say the OP was referring to the .50 AE - which would destroy a 1911 frame in one shot - not to mention it wouldn't fit in the mag well.

IIRC the .50 GI has the same rim diameter as the .45 ACP - so I think you can swap mags and barrels and shoot the gun with .45 (as long as you get the proprietary mag and barrel).

If I won the lottery, I might buy one just because.

Aw come on Bud...there's always a point in acquiring a new gun that nobody else at the range has.
