No, the ring you see is normal. Your revolver is fine.
When that ring turns into a groove, then you might consider replacing the cylinder, but that is normal.
The next time you have a chance to, unload the gun and cycle it a couple of times. Watch that locking lug on the bottom of the frame and see how it works. That will explain why you are getting that ring.

And learn you shall since you're not too prideful to ask! I've done some pretty ignorant things because I didn't know and didn't ask! What's also normal on the 642 is for the clear coat finish on the aluminum frame to start to show wear after you've carried and shot it a while. It's just part of the normal wear and tear on that gun. Drove me nuts when I first saw it starting on mine but oh well, if you don't want wear on the finish then it has to sit in the safe, not in a holster or pocket!

My 442 has that as well.
Perfectly normal for a revolver. If it weren't there you aren't shooting enough!!
