Simple. Get the J-Frame with the shrouded hammer, you get the snag free of the enclosed hammer, but the option to go SA like the 60.

I have both the 36 (blued version of 60) and a 649. I MUCH prefer the shrouded barrel of the 649. If I were starting over I wouldn't buy one of the un-shrouded guns for carry. The Centennials and Bodyguards are prime carry pieces. Of course, don't forget about the L frame Bodyguard 296 .44 Special!
I love my model 60, but if you are planning on pocket carry get the bobbed hammer on the 640. I find a J frame snub hard to conceal due to cylinder width, for belt carry I would want the hammer and my model 60 pre-lock.

I will be carrying it iwb. I do think the hammerless would be the way to go so not to snag on clothing.
I went with the 642. Carry it with SGD 135G+P JHP's.

The wife loves her 638. I think it is ugly as a wart on the end of a nose. Good gun, decent shooter considering the 2" barrel and barrel jump, but still UGLY.
I have a model 640 .38 Special (no dash,no lock).It is a great pocket carry revolver.

Love my 640 in 357. Hammerless = no snags, no poking.
i carry a model 60 with a bobbed hammer. i got the bobbed hammer many mango seasion ago. it was not hard to put in. sometimes ebay will have them for sale. so if it was me i would go with the model 60 and get a bobbed hammer.

I have both the 640 and the 60 in .38. The 60 was my first pistol. The 640 was purchased because the NYPD did not allow a revolver that had the ability to be single action to be carried by the class that I was hired with. But I love my 640 as well.
If I was making a new purchase and I had to choose, I would go with the 640. It won't snag and you can fire it from inside a pocket.
I'm also glad that neither of my j frames have an internal lock.

It is better to have your gun and not need it, than to need it and not have it!
