How many Ruger SP101's do we need?
Would like to hear the thoughs of those who've had/have the SP101. I have the 3" and love it. I want to send it to Gemini for a make over, however, I use it for camping, etc and would hate to get it all messed up. So I've thought of buying a 2" hammerless SP101 so I have both. One I'll use as my work horse pistol, the other send to Gemini and make it pretty for "sometimes" carry in an OWB or IWB.
I'd also love to have the porting but have read enough about it to discourage me from doing that on a gun that will mainly be for CCW.
So what would you guys do? Or what have you done?
Get the 3" with hammer tricked out and bobbed for carry and get another 3" for the woods?
Get a 2" and use it for CCW, send it to Gemini and leave the 3" as a hiking gun?
Forget my crazy ideas, get the 3" customized and carry it no matter what the role? And with Porting and a bobbed hammer to boot?
Just curious if any of you have gone through this same internal debate with yourselves? It's enough to drive a guy crazy

The way I see it, why pay hard earned money and take the time to have it purty'ed up just to be a safe queen? Aside from the bead blast, everything Gemini does is to enhance its performance. What will you do to the gun in the woods that you wouldnt do every other day?

personally, I'd buy another 2" or 3" w / the bobbed hammer have that one slicked up. Keep the one one you presently have for a 'woods gun'. Two years ago I slipped on some loose shale and gouged the heck out of my SA Government's grip... only the grip was damaged, but it was all I thought about the rest of the trip. I'm still looking for a beater 44Mag 4" for just that purpose.

I've been thinking about the same thing. I've got a 2" SP101 with the bobbed hammer and love it for IWB carry.
However what I want is a 3" GP100, with the fixed sights to use for woods carry, and anywhere else where an OWB holster will work. I lam looking for one with the shortened shroud that Ruger used to make but discontinued a couple of years ago.
Regardless of what you do you can't go wrong with the SPs or GPs.

Ah HA! This is a trick question. "How many SP101's do we need?" Come ON Gideon! Anyone who has one loves it. Anyone who has TWO... loves them both! It's like asking how much home-made ice cream still tastes good? My 3" is my "woods walking partner" & my bobbed 2" w/ CT laser grips is regularly my CCW. They're like Mint Julips at the Kentucky Derby, One's Plenty, Two's Too Many, Three's...not NEAR enough!
There are only TWO kinds of people in this world; those that describe the world as filled with two kinds of people...and those who don't.

Some very good points!! After listening to all of this I'm leaning towards leaving the hammer on the 3", sending it to Gemini for bead blast and action/trigger job. This would be my woods gun. If it gets scratched, it can always be bead blasted again. No porting mainly for the issue of loudness.
Then, I'll get the 2" hammerless, send it to Gemini for bead blast and action/trigger job, no porting w/night sight; that'll be a sometimes CCW gun carried OWB.
Sounds like a plan! I wish the GP100 would work but it's just a bit big. The Taurus 627 is supposed to be a compact frame but I haven't been able to find one to hold.
Sure is hard making all the choices! Thanks for all the help!!
