I think that $449 is a fair price for a 3 inch model 66-2 in excellent condition. The 3 inch versions of this gun are more scarce than the 2.5 inch version, and generally command a premium. Additionally, the 66-2 model is old enough (1970s manufacture?) to avoid the internal lock and date from the days when S&W had a good quality reputation.
I have a 66-3 with 2.5 inch barrel that I bought about 3 years ago for $300, and feel that I was very fortunate on the price. These guns have gone up fairly sharply in value in recent years.

Ray,
I believe it's more likely that this S&W is a Model 65 (fixed sights) instead of a Model 66 (adjustable sights). The Model 65 with a 3 inch barrel is a fairly common standard production gun, whereas the 3 inch Model 66 is a rather scarce limited production gun for Lew Horton and RSR Wholesale in the 1980s.
That said, it it's a M65, the asking price is a bit high, by about $100.00 or so.

Got mine for $300 police trade in
Looks steep to me for being used - even in excellent condition. A brand new 4" is going for about $460 S&W 66, .357 mag, 4in Barrel, Stainless, Int Lock **SPECIAL ORDE for Sale at Buds Gun Shop I don't see how an inch less barrel should cost the same new. I'd try to haggle a bit on the price. That being said, if its in excellent condition, that's a real nice gun. Might be a good idea to buy it!

I bought it $449.00. Thank you all for your input.

You will love that gun!!! Steve48
I have a 686, same length, 7 shot. Probably one of my top three favorites. Same as yours, but an L frame, full underlug. You're gonna' be real happy with that gun.

Damm!! What a deal you got on that one!!! Have one I paid a whopping $275.00 for back in 85 and is now worth appx 650.00+. Your's would be to if you received the original box and paperwork.
Either way it is by far my favorite S&W and if you need to get rid of it please give me a jingle. I highly recommend you don't as these are very sought after S&W's. Mine is also the most accurate revolver in my colllection and with round butt grips absolutely disappears in a IWB holster. Congrats.![]()
