I'll second what USA said. Have a deputy sheriff friend who carries the Beretta PX4. I own a Beretta Vertec and a SIG 228. The PX4 has to be the lightest recoiling 9mm pistol that I have ever shot. On top of that it is a very accurate weapon. I can shoot tighter groups with it than either of my other two 9's. Best of luck and hope your wifes condition improves.

Make certain that your wife can operate the slide on the Walther PPK/S before you buy one. It's a great little firearm but the slide is very stiff and there is not much to grab onto.
I'm only mentioning it because that is the firearm that my wife originally wanted and she had big trouble working the slide. She just does not have the hand and finger strength.

The recoil spring is a bear! I own a 1971 vintage German-made model and taking it apart to clean it is a feat even for me.
