    Greetings,

If memory serves me correct, the P1 has an aluminum frame and the P38 has a steel frame.

    Sincerely,
    Pete

    P1's receiver is aluminum alloy,

    P-38 is steel
Sometimes I wonder who the old man in the mirror is....

Lord, Grant me a good sword and no need to use it.

Neither the steel or alloy is very suitable for concealed carry in my not so humble opinion.
Just on the remote chance that you're thinking about buying one for defensive carry.

The P38 is built on the same Walther action design that the PP and PPK use. It was a standard German sidearm in WWII. After the war, the alloy frame version was made and was designated the P-1. I think in part because the P-38 had a "Nazi" past. The West German army and police used P-1's for many years. Both are great pistols. The P-38 would be of more historic value. The P-1 would likely be in better condition.

    Exclamation P38 action

Sorry, but the PP and PPK are both blow-back actions. The P-38 and P-1 are NOT.

The P-38 and the P-1 have a delayed recoil actions.

    Look at this animation: http://www.p38forum.com/anime7.swf

Then look at a PPK. You'll see the difference!

I had the chance to shoot a P38 today for the first time. While I did not like that DA first shot, the SA was nice. I also didnt care for the sights. They were pretty basic but seemed very stout.

I would like to have one just to add to the collection and shoot occasionally.

Gander Mountain has these guns for $279. That is a lot of gun for the money. True they aren't good choices for CCW, but they are hard to beat as relatively inexpensive house guns or truck guns. And they are quite accurate. I have one that I bought forty years ago, and it will keep a gallon milk jug dancing at fifty yards with no trouble. On the other hand, you can put out another hundred bucks and get a more contemporary gun in the same caliber in a much smaller package.
