I am thinking your first 1911 should be a basic model. Why? It will not cost a lot, will leave you plenty of money for ammo, it will allow you to learn what you like/dislike about 1911s, and what you want to change. In the end, take a long look at an RIA Commander. Regards, Richard

Don't touch the RIA Commander. You're going to have to get night sights out of the box and it'll leave you wanting more. If you can afford more, then get more.

Kimber or SA both great, I promote the Kimber Ten series, 13+1 in a 4" barrel, same price and most single stacks, check out their website

I would suggest you reread my post and then dispute my thinking. I am sure I have learned something in 18 years of owning 1911s and shooting handguns for 40 years. The RIA is the best alternative to a name brand available since Americans can no longer buy new Norinco 1911s. Again, 1911s are a learning process. Lastly, I find night sights to be an advantage in low light but not in total darkness. Regards, Richard

A Les Baer Thunder Ranch Commanche with a 4 1/4 inch barrel. Price is about $2000+, but worth it.
