    Glock or S&W MP .40?

Hopefully there isn't a thread like this one. I have just recently got my CCL and am looking to buy my first pistol. I am trying to decide between a Glock 23 and a M&P 40. Just wondering if anyone had any suggestions or opinions on these two pistols.

My advice is go to a range that will allow you to try them both out. After shooting each gun you will likely have a favorite. I have shot and owned both and I currently own two M&Ps a full size .40 and a compact 9. They have both been great guns.

I like my Glocks---I've never owned a S&W, likely never will.

Like others have stated, best to try or at least handle BEFORE you buy. Both are popular quality guns by respectable companies. But each will feel different in YOUR hand. How do they fit your hand, how do they point, are you comfortable with it and its features. Glocks are pretty much straight forward, M&Ps have some options in the grips. Personally I LOVE my Glocks, don't own an M&P. I've shot them, but was not so impressed that I'd trade my Glock for one.

I shot both at my local range and ended up buying the G22, as I like the larger feel in my hand (at 6'4", 290). One thing I learned about after buying is that you should only shoot factory ammo through the OEM barrel. Apparently, if you use reloads, and the case has been reloaded more than once, then a gap in the barrel can cause what is termed a kaBOOM. Still saving up for a new barrel.

SO, until I can get a tighter barrel, I will be shooting slightly more expensive ammo.

I preferred the Glock because it felt better in my hands that the M&P did.

I have held them both, and the M&P felt the best to me, but what about reliability? What are some of the problems that people have experienced with either of the pistols?

I've owned both - a number of Glocks over the years, and an M&P 9mm (full size) and 40c (compact).

I now still have the 2 M&P's and sold all of my Glocks. This shooter likes the M&P's much better.

I have Glocks (see avatar) but my wife cannot handle them well. She has held the M&P and is planning to get one for CCW very soon. I'm hoping she doesn't have the issues others have mentioned. FWIW... I haven't had any problems with my Glocks.

If possible, try before you buy.

Avoid the M&P until the magazine drop problem is solved. When will that be, who knows. We do know that Glock has their act together when it comes to building quality handguns.

Get the Glock. Or any other proven design.

Go Glock, and I highly suggest the 9mm over the 40, in particular because you say its your first. It will serve you better for a few reasons.

I have an M&P 40c. It's served me well for many months now, and I haven't had any issues. But, others have, and Glock has a good reputation.

My decision was based on testing a bunch of pistols, Glocks included, and finding that the M&P is both comfortable and controllable (5'9", 150 lbs soaking wet). The grip pieces let me use the best grip for my hands.

I have a glock 23 and am very happy w/it. But i do admit that the compact M&P feels really nice in the hand..more so than the Glock..
